Gonubie Pine Forest: Then it broke...

Tell us about your favorite 4x4 trail. Tell us how easy or difficult it was, is there escape routes for the faint hearted? Please add some photographs if you can.

Gonubie Pine Forest: Then it broke...

Post by AM Racing »

Well a few weeks back we decided to go play.... We went to the pine forests close by. The group consisted of 2x Colt diesels,1x Cruiser Prado, 1x Jeep Rubicon and my Lux. I must say, this area is free to ride in and you have varying surfaces and obstacles ranging from 1-4. From clay, to mud, to beach sand, to donga's to rocky areas. The Colt's battled with diff locks that worked when they felt like it and I ended up breaking my diff but more on that later....We started in the bowl with some climbs and cross axle's.

The next "little" climb went fairly easy and i was surprised that my van went up so easy. I can't say the same for the Jeep though, even with front and rear lockers it did not manage it

The rest of the afternoon involved some mud, some Colt and Jeep recovery and a few bruises....

Mud is beautiful stuff! Whether you are 5 or 50, if you have a tricycle or a R500k 4x4 you ARE going to see if it can get though it and how fast it can get through it and how big a splash you can make. This little "boyish" trait cost me an alternator. So be warned :!: Only trnsverse mud like this as fast as you have to and as little as you have to :blackeye:

At the end of it all we came back into the bowl and I decided to give the climb another try just for the fun of it. And that where the day went pear shaped

Image

Well, when the Jeep tried going up earlier on it dug some holes. As I was climbing (diff lock on) the lost traction and slid back into the holes dug by the Jeep. Well with my tyres deflated to 1 bar, it bit alright! And took 5 teeth off the crownwheel    Hence the tow truck.... Pics to follow

Nice pics, Dylan  . Looks like you had fun despite the damages! (You should have called me!) :D:
When the diff / alternator is fixed (hope it's not tooooo pricey), I'm sure you'll want to go back .... when you do, let me know. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Strange how that jeep struggled as mentioned in one of the earlier photos. I saw those Jeeps perform! It was the diesel version.... But wow! I was so amazed!

Saturday or Sunday? Even if it's just for a couple of hours. Got things happening here next weekend, but a good excuse to get away would be welcome. :D: (Will explain later. ;-) )

As you can see, the diff needed some dentistry but the other interesting thing is the amount of mud in the brake drum. Had I not cleaned it would have eaten up those brake shoes in no time, so after an adventure check these things out

Well Toyota wanted R6500 +vat just for the crownwheel and pinion. No bearings or anything.I found a recon unit with a 6 month 10 000km warranty for R4500 + vat. You could see it was all new parts in the diff so I took it.
