Great pics! ... and looks like it was a successful and entertaining day for drivers and spectators alike.
I know we were not the organizers of this event, and I'm sorry to be the one that throws water on the fire, but I notice a couple points of concern (IRO obstacles that present the possibility of a 'roll-over') and feel that they need to be mentioned.
• Drivers and co-drivers not wearing helmets.
• Some open vehicles have no side rails on the roll cage at the cockpit and none have cargo nets.
• Don't see any 4-point harnesses being used on open roll cage vehicles.
It's often avoidable but too late when someone gets hurt.

Re: Hekpoort 9&10 Oktober 2010 - With Pics!!!!!!! Page 4....
Andre' I realise that you were involved in the organisation, and by taking this personally rather than as a constructive comment, you're being short sighted if I may say so (my comments were not a criticism of you or any individual). Let me explain.
Firstly, the event itself seems to have been a success and well attended by all the comments, pics etc. I said as much ...
Mouth of at me all you want, I can take it, but, if you're pro-active, as I'm hoping you are, and if at the organisation of next event that you are involved in, you remember my comments and implement some stricter safety rules at the risk of being unpopular (the same risk I just took by commenting as I did) then my comments will not have been in vain. Indeed, even if it serves to influence someone else that might read it, it may even save a life somewhere.
In the broader picture, with the NOW initiative (whereby the 4x4 sport and industry is being given the opportunity by Government to self regulate - for those who don't know) there is an added responsibility upon us as participants to step up to the plate in all aspects of the game, of which the safety of drivers, passengers and spectators alike is not the least.
Again, this was and is still not intended as an attack on you or your organisational abilities. Please take it in the constructive spirit that it is intended.
Firstly, the event itself seems to have been a success and well attended by all the comments, pics etc. I said as much ...
That said, there was at least one roll-over ... now imagine if the co-driver in that roll-over got an arm crushed or even his skull!! It's not necessarily likely, but a definite possibility. The repercussions at a personal level, ..... at club level .... the bad memories that will linger in the minds of the attendees and the damage to the reputation of the sport and to the event itself which has as you say been successful for the last 10 yrs running. Devastating!! How would people remember the event? ..... as the success it was in the past? ... I don't think so, they'll remember it as the event where "X" lost his life or got mangled. How would you feel about it?Great pics! ... and looks like it was a successful and entertaining day for drivers and spectators alike.

Re: Hekpoort 9&10 Oktober 2010 - With Pics!!!!!!! Page 4....
As far a I am aware this event is run by the Hekpoort4x4 Club alone. They are a small Club and arrange this event 2ce a year.Andre' I realise that you were involved in the organisation, and by taking this personally rather than as a constructive comment, you're being short sighted if I may say so (my comments were not a criticism of you or any individual). Yes Andy, your concerns are valid, but this is in the hands of the organisers and scrutineers.
Please guys no personal attacks, if drivers get injured or heaven forbid worse, lets rather take it up with the organisers and club concerned.
Personally I was a bit worried about crowd control and safety of the event (last event) due to the track layout which it is very tricky..... 'big machines and big noise attrackts spectators'
The track is a very challenging track in a small area.
Perhaps one of the organisers could comment further regarding some of the concerns

Re: Hekpoort 9&10 Oktober 2010 - With Pics!!!!!!! Page 4....
OK, if that is so then it would be my mistake and for that I would apologise, but I made my assumption on Andre's opening line ...As far a I am aware this event is run by the Hekpoort4x4 Club alone. They are a small Club and arrange this event 2ce a year.
I naturally thought that Andre' had some connection to the school and was involved.
None of this however detracts from the points I was trying to make IRO safety. Most clubs will have rules or at the very least guidelines covering those issues. My feeling is that there should be a set standard of safety measures that cover all such events (if it doesn't already exist).
Yes, roll-overs can be fun and it adds to spectator enthralment .... as long as the only injuries sustained are those to the vehicle.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

No Andy I have no connection to the school what so ever I just support them by competing in the event.Mud Dog wrote:I naturally thought that Andre' had some connection to the school.
I am just sick of people sitting on the side line looking for something to criticize.
It is because of this that the sport is struggling to grow in SA. Every time people organizes an event which takes lots of time and effort and most do it for free because the sport is there passion someone needs to lay an egg.
End result they just do not organize anything again.
Remember THIS IS NOT NATIONALS!!!!!

Thanks for your comment Stef, and ja, it wasn't intended as a critique but a point of concern. I more than expected a backlash, but couldn't bring myself to turn a blind eye. I'd like to believe that the point has struck home to all that read it, no matter what's been said and done. Ultimately I'd prefer to see offroad enthusiasts and clubs regulating themselves with approval from Govt. rather than have regulations imposed upon us by some group of bureaucrats that know little or nothing of our activities other than what they read in the negative press on various issues, safety being just one.Stef wrote:Looks like an awesome event!!

Loads of great pics (Cassie is stoked beyond medication), and a good spirit all round. I can see why this is such a popular event .... (it even provides a platform for aspiring Kwaito dancers ). And Ja, Congrats to Andre' and Blom ... well done! I always said I'm not a LR fan, but that I like the look of Blom's 'Boesman'.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Regulation by Govt
They can't even get the numberplates right....
On afterthought found myself guilty of some wrecklessness at RDW this weekend, guess that's why I might be more open to "concerns" but let's not hijack the thread.

And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!
