Trekoskraal Clean-up - 25-27 Jan 2013

Post by pietpetoors »

Every year hundreds of people go camping at Trekoskraal. It is not a formal camp site.
Unfortunately many of them campers leave the place dirty.

I see lately there are many campers who at least put their crap in black bags, but then they leave the black bags there. I think they think it is a formal camping site and somebody will come take the bags away.

It does make it much easier that they put it in bags and leave it there. But as the sun burns the bags and the wind also plays its part, the bags soon go broken and then the wind distribute all the plastic and other rubbish into the lovely area.

I will rent a trailer again like last time and then we go see how much we can clean in one weekend.

You R free to come just for the day or stay the weekend.
Remember you must be self sustainable, there ain't no fancy toilets, showers or hair dryers. You must take your own water and own spade. You can wash when you get home on Sunday.

Who is coming along?

Yes you are doing a great job on the photo side.
This is an easy one to orginize.
Cost = zero
Bookings = zero
Pitch up if you want just make sure you bring all food and drinks and whatever you need for the weekend.

I think only thing we ask for each person who attend to bring at least 10x black bags.

I have been there 4 times in as many past weeks, its is dreadful to see the S*** people leave. I camped at a few of my favourite spots only to spend the first 30 minutes picking up other peoples crap......irritates the hell out of me....so for one I am......

I think Piet depending on the amount of headcount we get that we split up into teams covering sections as the place was packed over xmas period as I was there.......especially the first area as you can get there with a platkar.......

I noticed a popular thing is to dump your bags at the last cattle grid before you hit the gravel road, maybe its ignorance or maybe its just bone idleness on behalf of certain individuals.....

Nice one piet,........so come on guys, get your names down and we make an informal Hilux club outing...... :taunt:

I don't know where the place is or what it looks like, but have a suggestion...

Can one not put a permanent sign there informing people that camp that they should take back what they brought in as there is no refuse removal services?

For those that have'nt camped there before, it is a little piece of heaven that some selfish people have left in a mess....We pay for the camping with our labour, a great trade. Bring 10x black garbage bags each, all water and food etc. No toilets either, so pack a spade for ablutions..

Maybe we can have a great communal braai at the end of the day and a lekker kuier..

Stu I think it is a matter of people being uninformed. They do not know what to do with their rubbish and think there is a cleaning service which must pick it up.

Funny, even if I camp at a proper campsite on a farm I still take my rubbish with me because I recon that it is easier for our municipality to get rid of it than for the farmer. Guess every body is not the same.

I prefer the heap at the gate than having it scattered all over the place.
Oh Ja, Elmi is mos now working for the municipality so she did mention the heap at the entrance to the rubbish manager and he said he will ask the truck to go collect it. Will take my hat off for him if they actually do it.

I am not sure if this is good or bad news, but..............

We went to Trekos yesterday and the area where we went were rather clean.
So there are not these heaps of bags anymore. There are some smaller heaps that have to be cleaned up, but not nearly as bad as it was.

Apparently the municipality was there. I asked Elmi to find out today if they actually cleaned everything. Is amazing to think they can do something like that

NO, WE DO NOT cancel, there are still some minor cleaning to do.
We can still make a difference.

More time to kuier

The guys who are camping must remember there are nothing, not even shade
You must bring everything you need including water (5 litre per day per person), spade (toilet), your own shade, etc, etc, etc

Andre, very easy to get to and you can rock up when you like as its open land, you go all the way through Vredenburg on road to paternoster, about 3 km out of town you will see a sign on your left saying "nuwe Rust"and Trekoskraal, take this gravel road for about 10 to 12 km without turning off, you eventually come to a cattle grid, keep going around to the left, follow the tracks now with out turning off once again, its about another 5 km and you come down over the crest of a hill and you will see at the bottom another cattle grid. go through this and keep left once again, then basically keeping the sea to your right just keep going for about another 5 km or so. bear in mind you will come to a point where it splits into 3 tracks, these have varying difficulties, so if you havent been there before just keep to the track closest to the sea (my girlfriend does this in a corsa). The area where the guys are going to camp (or spot etc) is behind some low dunes, there is a longish curved beach and its quite open, ahead you will sea tracks which are quite rocky going up the hillside, this is where the guys intend to meet and camp.

When driving there, just take it easy as there is always some idiot blasting along or quad bikes etc....but otherwise you will be fine. I have the GPS coords but its in my truck and its not by me at the moment....

Hope this helps, cheers Stubs

The guys and girls from Mortimer Toyota will be visiting us on Friday night
They bring sponsor us some boerewors rolls for Saturday, some cooldrink, beer and wood.

Obviously those who are not there on Friday night will loose out on the beers, so make sure you there on Friday evening.

I think I will be there at about 18h00, Elmi only gets home at 17h00

I would like to thank the people who helped this weekend to clean Trekoskraal. It was a huge success and a memorable weekend. It was so nice to meet another two members of the family. Andre and Marlize.

It was nice to see how everybody jumped in and helped.

We cleaned the whole area from Perlemoenvlei up to the main camp.
That is more than half of the total area.

Although it looked "cleanish" we still removed about 100 bags of rubish, most of which were liquer bottles and mostly the small bottles like beer, savanha, brutal fruit, etc.

A very big thanx to Mortimer Toyota in Vredenburg who sponsored food and drinks for Saturday. After a day in the sun those boerewors rolls and ice cold beer were welcome. We are very happy to see that you guys are also concerned about the environment and we really appreciate the fact that you and Anton (from TSA) came to visit us on Friday evening.

Below are some pics.

Well done to all you guys and girls who cleaned up this awesome place. It is a pity that I live so far, otherwise I would have also come and helped clean up. I have not had the pleasure of being able to visit this place but it does look very there. We also get to see some rubbish left behind up here by us, but not to the extent of your problem. I often wonder if these people live like this at home also. Once again it is great to see some people who are prepared to clean up someone elses rubbish, you should put pics in the local papers to try and make these people feel guilty about the way they leave a place.

Groete
