MEDIA RELEASE
City advises of alternative access to Atlantis Dunes during reserve upgrade
The City is constructing a multipurpose office complex at its Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve to better manage activities at the site. During the construction phase, Gate 1 of the reserve will not be accessible. Read more below:
The City of Cape Town this month started construction on a multipurpose centre at the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve to serve as a gateway to the Atlantis Dunes. The centre is scheduled for completion by June next year, if all goes according to plan.
The dunes not only provide a high water recharge for the Atlantis Aquifer, but are an important recreational and commercial area for various activities, including off-road driving, sandboarding, and film productions. Currently these activities are managed remotely. The new centre will enhance the use of the site and improve access to the area for environmental education purposes.
During the construction phase of the multipurpose centre, the main gate (Gate 1) situated off the R307 Dassenberg Drive will be inaccessible. The City has therefore provided alternative access to the dunes through another gate (Gate 2) which is also on Dassenberg Drive, a short distance from the main gate.
The City thanks residents for their patience during the closure. Once completed, this upgrade will be to the benefit of all residents.
The Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve is one of 16 nature reserves managed by the City. It is situated 45 km from the city centre along the R27 West Coast Road and 7 km south of Atlantis.
The reserve is an important area for biodiversity and water security and is part of the Dassenberg Coastal Catchment Partnership (a critical climate change corridor as recognised by the World Wide Fund for Nature).
