Glad to hear, it's just unfortunate about them only wounding the 1 (NOT RHINO).

Another rhino death: Possibly poison
2010-09-28 23:08
Marietie Louw-Carstens, Beeld

Pretoria - A pregnant rhino cow has died under mysterious circumstances on the farm neighbouring that of Dawie Groenewald, the suspected mastermind of an alleged rhino poaching syndicate who was arrested last week.

Lourens Louw, owner of the farm Mafunyani, in the Messina district, confirmed on Tuesday that one of his rhino cows died on Monday.

Beeld has learned that the police are conducting tests on a poisonous substance found near a watering hole on the farm.

Mafunyani borders on the farm Prachtig, which belongs to 42-year-old Groenewald, a well-known figure in wildlife circles.

Groenewald, a former policeman, was released on R1m bail in the Messina magistrate's court last week in connection with his alleged involvement in a syndicate that kills rhinos.

Louw was not able to say on Tuesday what had caused the rhino cow's death. According to him, it doesn't look like the animal was shot.

"At the moment I don't know whether the animal might have been poisoned or shot. I'm waiting for the result of the police investigation."

Young cow

According to him the rhino cow - who was about 4 years old - was pregnant.

"It's possible that she died when she had to give birth. She had a lot of blood on her."

Louw said the animal's horns had not been sawn off. After the animal died, police cut the horn off and are holding it in safekeeping.

"We'll have to wait for the post-mortem to tell us what killed her."

Louw denied rumours that he gave any information regarding Groenewald's alleged involvement in rhino killing to the police or game wardens.

Meanwhile, Sarel van der Walt reports that farmers with rhinos have been warned to be on the look-out for poisoned cabbages which are placed in rhinos' "territorial dung heaps".

Wildlife Ranching South Africa (WRSA) released a statement calling on game farmers to contact the police as soon as possible if they spot any of these poisoned cabbages.

Rhinos have the habit of visiting their dung heaps often, and then eat whatever food has been planted there.

The organisation also warned farmers to be very cautious, since the chances are great that poachers are still in the area.

Poaching: 21 arrested in 3 weeks
2010-10-05 14:46

Johannesburg - Twenty-one people have been arrested in connection with rhino poaching in South Africa in the past three weeks.

Eleven people, including two veterinarians, a pilot and a game farmer, all allegedly part of a rhino poaching syndicate, were arrested in Limpopo last month.

National police spokesperson Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said it was believed they had been involved in several hundred incidents of rhino poaching, rhino killing, selling of the horns and disposing of the rhino carcasses over the past few years.

They allegedly operated around Polokwane, Modimolle and Musina.

Veterinarian Karl Toet and his colleague Manie du Plessis were said to be the two alleged masterminds behind the syndicate.

R1m bail

All 11 were released on bail ranging from R20 000 to R1m.

Another two men were arrested in Limpopo in connection with dehorning rhinos and the buying and selling of horns.

It was alleged that Jan Karel Pieter Els, 37, bought 36 rhino horns from Tom Fourie, 51, who allegedly dehorned the rhinos.

The men had appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court.

Els was released on R30 000 bail and Fourie on R5 000 bail.

A few days later three men were arrested inside the Kruger National Park by game rangers.

The game rangers came across the men walking around the park with rifles and allegedly in possession of two rhino horns while a carcass was found nearby.

They appeared in the White River Magistrate's Court and were granted R7 500 bail each.

Highest level in 15 years

Police were investigating the possibility that the men were part of a syndicate responsible for other poaching incidents in the area.

Last week five people believed to be rhino poachers were arrested in Ophathe Game Reserve near Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal. The arrests were the result of months of investigating by a team of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife staff and police.

The group was expected to appear in the Ulundi Magistrate's Court this week.

The Ophathe Game Reserve had been plagued by rhino poaching with three rhinos killed and their horns removed in the past ten days.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said the recent poaching of rhinos in the game reserve had bought the number of poached rhinos to 17 in KwaZulu-Natal this year.

South Africa has lost 210 rhinos to poaching since January, compared to 122 for all of last year.

Black-market demand for rhino horns had risen sharply as economic growth had spread through east and south-east Asia, where the horn was believed to have medicinal properties.

Wildlife monitoring group Traffic said the surge in demand, combined with endemic poverty in many rhino habitats, had helped to push rhino poaching to the highest levels in 15 years.

More rhino poacher arrests soon
2010-10-05 23:40

Elise Tempelhoff, Beeld
Pretoria - Many, many more people will soon be arrested due to their involvement in rhino poaching, Ken Maggs, member of the SANParks team investigating the crime, said on Tuesday.

"I hate to say it, but these are people who are involved in nature conservation.

"It's going to turn the game industry upside down and it's going to shock many people.

"We have already issued warrants for the arrests. It's going to happen soon," he repeated.

He predicted that there would be a significant decrease in incidents of rhino poaching after all the arrests have been made.

The biggest problem facing the investigating team, which consists of more than nine units, is "to understand the dynamics of the demand for rhinos", he said.

Maggs said that since the start of the year, 112 people have been arrested in connection with rhino poaching.

:eh:

Why not go to the source though! Create rhino poaching awareness in Asia , give the facts, big posters of dead animals maybe.Show them that rhino horn doesn't really work , 9 times out of ten these substances don't work, just like the muti trade here in sa,but if you can snub it at the demand level than you don't need to worry about supply.
With each replacement of parts, a car slowly becomes Chinese.

2010-10-14 21:29

Johannesburg - A poacher was shot dead and another wounded in the Kruger National Park, SABC News reported on Thursday.

The men were allegedly found armed inside the park on Wednesday by rangers who were patrolling, Sanparks CEO David Mabunda said.

A shoot-out ensued and one of the men was killed.

His accomplice escaped, but was arrested later while he was being treated at a hospital.

A rifle, cellphone and ammunition was found on the dead man, SABC News reported.

Since the beginning of the year, 232 rhino had been poached throughout South Africa, 104 of them from the Kruger National Park.

One-hundred-and-nineteen alleged poachers had been arrested, 45 of them in the park.

Rhino hits rangers in poaching arrest
2010-10-15 22:25

Mbombela - Two Kruger National Park rangers were injured this week when they were hit by a rhino as they tried to arrest a group of poachers, SANParks said on Friday.

The rhino, which was being hunted by the group, "accidentally ran into the field rangers" during the operation, spokesperson Wanda Mkutshulwa said in a statement.

"The field rangers are currently being treated for their injuries which fortunately are not life threatening."

She said the rangers confronted three poachers on Thursday after they had entered the park from Mozambique.

One man was arrested and a rifle seized. His accomplices fled and were being sought.

Mkutshulwa said the arrest came two days after a poacher was shot dead and another wounded in the park. He was under police guard at hospital.

A rifle, cellphone and ammunition were found on the dead man.

Since the beginning of the year, 232 rhino had been poached throughout South Africa, 104 of them from Kruger National Park.

A total of 119 alleged poachers had been arrested, 45 of them in the park.

Rhino poachers strike in N West
2010-10-17 18:46

Johannesburg - A white rhino has been poached in the Borakalalo National Park near Brits, the head of counter-poaching in North West said on Sunday.

"The carcass was found today (Sunday). We're not sure when it was killed," said Rusty Hustler.

The rhino's horn was taken.

Hustler said he would be going to Borakalalo on Monday to investigate the poaching along with a ballistics team.

More than 200 rhinos have been killed by poachers this year, compared to 122 the whole of last year.

010/10/18

THE Pretoria High Court yesterday refused to postpone the criminal trial of three alleged rhino horn racketeers and ordered that the 50 charges against them be withdrawn for now.

Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa- Thusi dismissed an application by the State to postpone the trial of safari operators Clayton Fletcher of Bloemfontein, Gert Saaiman of Pretoria and Pretoria hunter Frans Andries van Deventer.

She struck the case off the roll and ordered that it may not be reinstituted without written instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The charges include racketeering, money laundering, theft and contraventions of the Aviation and Environmental Protection Act.

The judge said the sole reason for the postponement sought by the State related to consultations with the witness Deon van Deventer (Frans Van Deventer’s brother) to persuade him to testify.

The State had made no submissions whatsoever about how it intended persuading Van Deventer to testify.

The State admitted it could not prove charges of racketeering and money laundering against the accused.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said: “ We have the right to reinstitute charges once we’ve resolved whatever challenges we have.” — Sapa

Poached rhino was pregnant
2010-10-18 22:16

Mafikeng - The white rhino cow killed by poachers in the Borakalo National Park, near Brits, was pregnant, the National Wildlife crime investigation unit in the North West said on Monday.

The rhino was shot some time last week and her carcass was discovered on Sunday in a dam at the park. Her horn had been taken.

Head of the investigating unit Rusty Hustler said this was the 14th rhino killed at the park this year.

More than 200 rhinos have been killed by poachers this year, compared to 122 the whole of last year.

Rhino fitted with GPS devices
2010-10-21 10:08
Johannesburg - Five rhino in the North West have been fitted with a GPS device that will help protect them from poachers, the provincial Parks Board said on Thursday.

"The GPS device is fitted into the rhino's horn by drilling a hole in the inert part of the horn," head of counter-poaching in the North West, Rusty Hustler said.

"The animals’ movements are then tracked 24/7 and if they are attacked, game rangers will be alerted via the alarms."

This was the first time a device like this was being used.

The device was battery-operated and connected to a cellphone and a computer. It had a life span of two-and-a-half years, he said.

Reaction team

The GPS could be programmed to emit a signal every 60 seconds and could be adjusted from the operating room. It was programmed to set off the alarm if the rhino was motionless for more than six hours, or if there was excessive movement.

A "reaction team" would go out if the alarm went off, Hustler said.

The GPS was also a good ecological monitoring device, he said.

"In the future we could offer students an opportunity to come to the parks and do studies on rhinos."

The device was still in the test phase, but the North West Parks Board was happy with its results so far.

"If we prove it completely then my consideration will be that all the North West parks that have rhino should have the GPS device."

More than 200 rhinos had been slaughtered countrywide since the start of the year. In the North West alone more than 40, including a pregnant cow, had been killed.

Hustler explained well-organised syndicates comprised five levels. Level one were the poachers, level two the controller who organised these gangs, and level three the purchaser. Then came the individuals who co-ordinated the shipping of horns abroad and lastly international buyers.

Shot rhino recovers at zoo
2010-10-26 10:00

Johannesburg - Phila, a black rhino cow who has been shot at least nine times in two poaching attempts, is now recovering in the Johannesburg Zoo.

The 5-year-old animal arrived at the zoo on Monday, and is expected to remain there for six months before being released into the wild again.
The first attack on Phila was in July, when she was shot twice.

About three weeks ago she was again attacked in a secured enclosure. She was then shot at least seven times.

Phila's horn was cut off long ago to protect her against poachers. But she was attacked both times for the stump, which isn't longer than 5cm.

Miracle
Dr Brett Gardner, a vet at the zoo, believes it was a miracle that she survived.

"She is very lucky. The guys that shot her were amateurs. They made mistakes and that is why she survived.

"She is very shy. She associates people with things that go wrong."
Phila was shot in the jaw, middle ear and legs. She is partly deaf in one ear.

"It is a happy day because no one is shooting at her, but she isn't completely out of danger yet. The first month will be difficult, also because she is now in an urban area. I will be happy after one month and after three months, I will be very happy," said Gardner.
He added that Phila could get secondary infections.

Curious people and employees of the zoo watched on Monday afternoon while Phila was unloaded. She was nervous because of all the attention and ran about in her enclosure.

"I am very relieved," said Phila's owner, a man who wanted to be known only as Allan, after her arrival at the zoo.

According to the zoo, there are strict security measures in place to keep her safe.

R1m breeding rhino poached
2010-11-14 21:06

Johannesburg - Two rhinos were poached and another two wounded at a game park near Klerksdorp, North West police said on Sunday.
The first carcass was discovered on Saturday morning, said police spokesperson Adele Myburgh.

"The owner of the game park... went to inspect the camp. He stumbled upon the (carcass) of a white rhino bull with an estimated value of R1m.

"The horn was removed, and the carcass was still quite fresh."

Myburgh said the bull was worth so much because it had been used for breeding.

A helicopter combing the area spotted another rhino carcass, she said on Sunday. This white rhino bull was worth about R350 000 and had also had its horn removed.

Another two wounded rhino cows were spotted from the helicopter.

Badly injured

"Their horns had not been removed, but they had been shot and wounded. They will have to shoot (one of the cows) because it's very badly injured."

The other cow was proving difficult to track down because she was frightened.

No arrests had been made.

In Limpopo on Saturday, one man was arrested after a rhino was shot and killed on a farm in Naboomspruit. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said a farmer and his workers were patrolling the farm when they heard gunshots just after 05:00.

"They went to investigate and found a dead rhino that had been shot."

More than 20 people have been arrested countrywide in separate cases involving rhino poaching since September.

At least 210 rhinos have been killed for their horns since the beginning of this year - up from a total of 122 poached last year.

Black-market demand for rhino horns has risen sharply as economic growth has spread through east and south-east Asia, where the horn is falsely believed by some to have medicinal properties.

Rhino shot in Limpopo
2010-11-13 21:23

Johannesburg - Another rhino was shot and killed in a farm in Naboomspruit in Limpopo on Saturday, provincial police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said a farmer and his workers were patrolling the farm when they heard gun shots just after 05:00.

"They went to investigate and they found a rhino dead after it had been shot."

Otto said the farmer informed the police and searched with his workers for the suspects while waiting for the officers to come.

"Our officers, together with the farmer and his workers searched the whole day. A shoot-out ensued between the police and the suspects between 17:00 and 18:00.

"One suspect was shot in the hip; he was arrested and taken to hospital. He is under police guard. The rest are still at large."

Otto said police were still searching for the rest of the suspects. More than 20 people have been arrested countrywide in separate cases involving rhino poaching since September.

At least 210 rhinos have been killed for their horns since the beginning of this year - up from a total of 122 poached last year.

This is very upsetting news. I had the privilege of driving around a private Rhino Reserve here a couple of months ago, we were testing the effectiveness of a two-way radio system for the farm. It was magnificent being able to drive within a few metres of these giant and gentle animals. Hope it's not the same farm.

Rhino dump found on govt park
2010-11-18 23:04

Elise Tempelhoff and Buks Viljoen, Beeld
Nelspruit - Limpopo officials have discovered a rhino cemetery containing 17 rhino carcasses at the Letaba Ranch, on the western border of the Kruger National Park.
"We're devastated," Joshua Kwapa, spokesperson for Limpopo's department of economic affairs, development and tourism, said on Thursday.

According to him it seems the animals have been poached in this provincial reserve since last year.

"It could also have been earlier, perhaps even since three yeas ago. All the animals' horns have been removed.

"It's gruesome. We're shocked. We've launched a high-level investigation. The guilty parties must pay."

Kwapa insisted the gruesome find happened recently.

The border fences between the Letaba Ranch and the Kruger Park were removed several years ago, and game moved back and forth freely.

The management of the Letaba Ranch has come under severe fire over the past few years because the ranch appears to have collapsed.

An expert in environmental management, who prefers not to be named, wanted to know on Thursday how it's possible that carcasses could lie in the reserve for two years without the provincial department knowing about it.
"Heads must roll."

Shootout

Beeld has learned that investigators visited the area on Wednesday to determine how the animals had been poached. Apparently some of the horns were hacked off while others were cut off "neatly".

Kwapa says the carcasses were found when a "service provider" was doing a survey of the game on Letaba Ranch. He was flying over the reserve in a helicopter when he saw the carcasses.

According to Kwapa, everything possible will be done to track down the guilty parties. He said members of the national task team appointed to investigate rhino poaching, will also be involved.

Meanwhile, game rangers this week caught three suspected poachers near Pretoriuskop as they were on their way out of the game park.

The three men had four rhino horns with them. A shootout reportedly broke out between the men and the rangers.

Beeld has heard that one man was wounded in the shooting. He is in hospital in a critical condition.

A police official close to the investigation said game rangers seized a .303 rifle. It was fitted with a homemade silencer - a piece of water pipe welded onto the barrel of the rifle.

Game rangers were searching for more carcasses on Thursday.

Three rhino carcasses were found in the Loskopdam area at the weekend, two more at a reserve in the Hartbeesfontein area in the North West, and a sixth near Mookgophong (Naboomspruit).

So far 268 rhinos have been poached this year.

Another rhino killed by poachers
2010-11-19 18:05

Johannesburg - The body of a rhinoceros, with the horn hacked off, was found at the Amakhala Game Reserve near Grahamstown, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.
The body was discovered on Thursday evening after the rhino went missing on Monday afternoon, said Captain Ernest Sigobe in a statement.

"At this stage it is not clear how the suspects gained entry to the game reserve and the investigation continues and no suspects have been arrested as yet," he said.

Other game reserves in the area were urged to remain vigilant with their game and frequently visit areas where the animals grazed.

The discovery was made as a high level investigation into the discovery of the carcasses of 18 rhino at Letaba Ranch on the western border of the Kruger National Park was underway.

Game rangers this week caught three suspected poachers near Pretoriuskop as they were on their way out of the game park.

Three rhino carcasses were found in the Loskopdam area at the weekend, two more at a reserve in the Hartbeesfontein area in the North West, and a sixth near Mookgophong (Naboomspruit).

So far, 268 rhinos have reportedly been poached this year.

Nóg ’n renoster in die Oos-Kaap gestroop
2010-11-21 22:37

Helga van Staaden
Port Elizabeth.

Cops net rhino horns at road block
2010-11-22 19:09

Johannesburg - Two men were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning for illegal possession of rhino horns, Western Cape police said.

The horns were found during a routine road block near Beaufort West, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

"During the subsequent search members found fifteen rhino horns between the luggage of the two suspects. The horns were sealed in wrapped plastic and concealed in the luggage."

The horns weighed about 38kg and were valued around R2.6m, he said.

One of the men fled the scene as the other was being arrested but police found him at a guest house and arrested him as well.

It was alleged that the illegal shipment of rhino horn was destined for Cape Town as the men were travelling by public transport from Johannesburg, Pojie said.

Police were investigating the possibility that they were linked to a syndicate.

Cape Nature Conservation had joined the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit which was attached to the Hawks in assisting with the investigation.

The men were being held in the Beaufort West police holding cells and were expected to appear in court on Wednesday, Pojie said.

Rhino shot dead, horn left intact
2010-11-23 13:18

Polokwane - A rhino has been found shot dead on a game farm in the Thabazimbi area, Limpopo police said on Tuesday.

"People heard gunshots on Monday night and when they went to the place where the sound came from they found the dead rhino... the horn was not cut off," said spokesperson Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo.

"We think they tried to poach the rhino for its horn but [the attackers] were scared off."

He said police were still on the scene and a search party was combing the area for any more rhinos that might also have been shot.

No arrests have been made.

Cops hunting Limpopo rhino poachers
2010-11-23 20:29

Johannesburg - Police on Tuesday launched a man hunt for people who killed two rhinos and injured another two on a farm near Thabazimbi.

Farm workers heard automatic gun fire on Monday night and notified the police, said Colonel Motlafela Mojapelo.

A team was set-up to trace the poachers on the 7000ha farm.

The injured rhinos were found at different places on the farm with their horns not removed.

As the search continued, two carcasses were found with horns removed.

"It appears these rhinos were shot and killed two weeks ago as some sounds of gunfire were heard on the same farm but subsequent searches did not yield any results."

A case of illegal hunting of Specially Protected Animals without a permit has since been opened.

Earlier on Tuesday police found another dead rhinoceros at a game farm in the same area. Its horn had not been removed, as police believe that the poachers were scared off by someone.

More rhino poached in KZN
2010-11-30 17:05

Johannesburg - Three more rhinos have been poached in KwaZulu-Natal in the last four days, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said on Tuesday.
"Field rangers discovered the de-horned carcass of a young adult male white rhino in the southern area of the Western Shores of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (on November 26)... A post-mortem examination established that the animal was probably shot about a week earlier," the organisation's CEO Bandile Mkhize said in a statement.

Field rangers in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park found the de-horned carcasses of two more white rhinos in the iMfolozi section of the park on Monday.

Despite these losses, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife remained "optimistic" about the fight against rhino poaching.

Mkhize gave a presentation on rhino poaching to the South African Association for the Conference Industry recently, where members "enthusiastically promised financial support for ongoing rhino anti-poaching work in the KZN park system".

He said 18 more field rangers would be deployed to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park on Wednesday, and additional anti-poaching equipment issued.

Also on Tuesday three suspected rhino poachers were caught in the Tembe Elephant Park near the Mozambique border.

"On being challenged by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife field rangers the (men) opened fire and an exchange of gunfire ensued, during which one suspect was wounded."

The two other men were arrested. The wounded man was taken to hospital in Kwangwanase (Manguzi). Police were investigating.

To date 289 rhinos had been poached countrywide since the start of the year.

333 rhinos killed in 2010
2011-01-12 20:05

Johannesburg - A total of 333 rhinos were killed and dehorned countrywide in 2010, SA National Parks (SANParks) said on Wednesday.

The highest incidence of poaching took place in the Kruger National Park (KNP) with 146 rhinos killed, spokesperson Reynold Thakhuli told Sapa.

The North West province followed with 57 rhino deaths, and Limpopo closely behind with 52.

KwaZulu-Natal was at the bottom of the list with only 38 reported rhino killings last year.

Thakuli said 162 people linked to poaching the animals had been arrested.

"You see, the investigation takes a bit of time and many cases are still pending. We expect prosecutions soon."

He said authorities were intensifying their efforts to clamp down on poachers in South Africa.

Last year five poachers caught in the act were shot by the authorities while in the first month of 2011 the figure stood at six - five in the KNP and one in the North West province. January 2011 has so far seen five rhino killings in the country - two in the KNP, two in Limpopo, and one in the Eastern Cape.

I still think that all horns should be impregnated with deadly toxins and warnings posted in media (national & international) as well as along the fences and entry points of all reserves that keep rhino. The local communities around such reserves should also have an awareness program of the toxins and the importance of saving the rhino.

A bit drastic, but could prove to be the most effective deterrent. Prevention is better than cure. ;-)

I agree with that, the sooner those people using it for their yang start dying from poison then maybe they will stop the poaching.

Rangers are receiving death threats now!
Reynold Thakhuli, spokesperson for SANParks, says the onslaught against rhinos in the game park is growing by the day.

With the new year only 11 days old, five rhinos have already been poached in South Africa. Two of these were in the Kruger Park.

Information obtained confidentially says several rangers have received death threats over the past year.

In at least two cases, messages were found with the carcasses of dead rhinos.

Rangers apparently also received SMSes and messages on their cellphones.

In one case, a letter was left on the carcass, and in another, the death threat was written in the ground near the carcass.

saw this on the SANPARKS site

The Chief Executive Officer of South African National Parks (SANParks), Dr David Mabunda, announced at Pretoria today that in 2010 South Africa lost 333 rhino with 162 suspected poachers having been arrested in relation to the crime.

“The year 2010 will always be remembered as being one of the worst years for conservation in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) because of the ruthless assault on our rhino populations by merciless criminals”, said Dr Mabunda.

The worst hit areas were the Kruger National Park (KNP) with 146 rhino lost, North West province with 57 rhino, Limpopo province with 52 rhino, KwaZulu-Natal province with 38 rhino. The provinces with the least number of rhino or no rhino at all were least targeted by the criminals.

In the full year 162 people linked to the crime at various levels were arrested, ranging from actual poachers to couriers and kingpins. “The number of arrests made is considered to be an indication of the meaningful interventions brought by the National Wildlife Crime Reaction Unit (NWCRU) and the collective co-operation by different stakeholders as the figure for arrests in the KNP alone for 2009 was 29 people and in 2010 the park arrested 67 suspects”.

Whereas SANParks lost 146 rhino in the KNP, the Provincial Conservation Authorities put together clocked 105 rhino whilst private game reserve owners lost 82 rhinos. Of the 333 rhino lost throughout the country white rhino comprised 323 of the animals poached and 10 black rhino.

The country is currently home to about 19,400 white rhino, of which between 9,000 and 12,000 of them are found in the KNP, and 1 678 black rhinos. The white rhino population in the country is growing at a rate of between 3% and 6%, whilst the black rhino population is growing at 3%. In the Kruger National Park alone natural mortalities in the rhino populations for males accounted for 1.7% and females 0.7% and with the inclusion of poaching figures it was at 3% for males and 2.1% for females in 2010.

Dr Mabunda announced that it is unfortunate that five (5) suspected poachers died during encounters with rangers on patrol in the KNP and one (1) in the North West Province as the country would have preferred these suspected criminals to have their day in court and account for their actions.

“As much as the death of the poachers is regrettable, it is also an indication of how serious SANParks and the entire conservation fraternity view the looting of the nation’s natural assets.

In the first 10 days of 2011 the country has lost five (5) rhino already; 2 in KNP, 2 in Limpopo and 1 in the Eastern Cape. A number of undisclosed arrests were also affected in the same period.

He said since the beginning of this year a total of five (5) more poachers have died when Rangers acted in self-defence after poachers opened fire on them at Crocodile Bridge (in the last week) and Pretoriuskop (today, 11 January 2011). “It is more worrying that Rangers are often greeted by the poachers’ fire power without warning luckily our men and women are well trained”.

“In 2011 the NWCRU is planning to increase the intensity of the investigations and arrests by getting to the higher echelons of these syndicates. With the help of the international community we are confident we will be able to break these syndicates.”

“SANParks is extremely grateful to the South African government, the new Minister of Water and Environment and the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans for the offer of support by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) for anti-poaching activities. The inclusion of the SANDF with their state of the art surveillance equipment will add much needed impetus to the fight against rhino poaching and other forms of poaching”, said Dr Mabunda

Veearts vas oor horings
2011-01-21 20:58

Marietie Louw-Carstens

Nog ’n veearts is gister weens renosterhorings aangekeer.

Uys is die derde veearts wat in minder as vier maande in hegtenis geneem is weens hul beweerde betrokkenheid by renosterstropery.

Groenewald besit Out of Africa Adventurous Safaris.

Verlede jaar is meer as 300 renosters landwyd gestroop.

21 Rhino's poached for January 2011

First Western Cape rhino poached
2011-01-27 22:56

Johannesburg - A rhino was poached in the Western Cape for the first time at the Botlierskop private game reserve near Mossel Bay on Thursday, the reserve owner said.

Reserve owner Arnold Neethling said a white rhino bull, about 12 years old, was found poached at 09:30 on Thursday morning with its horns chopped off.

"We spotted it last night at about 19:45 and this morning on the daily checks we found it dead in the middle of a field."

He said it must have been done in the middle of the night when there was a lot of rain because it was in quite a busy area.

"We are hoping that someone saw something. If anyone saw anything they can go to the police or come to us."

He said it was a "real tragedy" and what bothered the most was that it was being done by organised crime

"This is a problem that the society of South Africa would have to solve," Neethling said.

"Once poachers have killed all the rhinos they would simply move onto another species."

21 rhinos poached in January
2011-01-31 21:19
Johannesburg - Twenty-one rhinos were poached in South Africa in January, SA National Parks (SANParks) said on Monday.

In the same period 31 people were arrested throughout the country - 16 in North West, 10 in the Kruger National Park (KNP), three in Gauteng and two in Limpopo, chief executive officer of SANParks David Mabunda said in a statement.

Since the beginning of the year five suspected rhino poachers died during skirmishes with park rangers in the KNP, while two had been wounded and were still hospitalised.

"The loss of 333 rhinos to poaching in 2010 was a devastating loss for us but we are determined that in 2011 this should not happen.

"Anyone who is involved in poaching at whatever level will be a prime target for our investigations and we will leave no stone unturned in this respect, including going for the kingpins of these operations," he said.

Last week SANParks announced the implementation of a new tool to assist with the fight against rhino poaching.

By documenting individual rhino DNA and using this information to link recovered rhino horns to specific crime scenes, individuals would be able to be linked to a specific crime and would be prosecuted for more than the lesser crime of possession alone, Mabunda said.

Heard on the radio lastnite that some Vietnamese hunters were arrested at OR Tambo with 3 horns. The horns weren't mounted by a professional taxidermist nor were they chipped.

Here is the kicker - these rhinos were hunted and shot on the farm owned by the Kingpin of the poaching ring ( I forget his name, but he was part of the original 11 arrested last year)

I'm afraid that the Goverment / Justice System and SANParks are letting the rest of SA down and will soon loose / make extinct one of the most beautiful national treasures that we have.

The Chief Executive Officer of South African National Parks (SANParks), Dr David Mabunda, announced at Pretoria today that in the month of January 2011 South Africa has lost 21 rhinos.

L’popo: Skurke skiet 5, stroop 3 diere
2011-02-26 23:15
Willem Pelser

Dié stropers was almal met outomatiese aanvalsgewere gewapen.

Renosters: Koei en kalf sterf vir horings
2011-03-01 21:48

Elise Tempelhoff

Me.

Albei se horings is afgesaag.

Verlede jaar is 333 renosters gestroop.

South Africa: Rhino Poaching a Cause for Concern - Molewa
Date Posted: Monday 07-Mar-2011

Pretoria - Water and Environmental Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa says rhino poaching in the country is a cause for concern as it is continuing to increase at an alarming rate.

Molewa is now calling for more public involvement in the efforts to reduce rhino poaching in the country.

She also took the opportunity to congratulate members of the National Wildlife Crime Reaction Unit (NWCRU) for their escalating number of arrests of suspected poachers and related criminals.

Since January 2011, a total of 51 rhinos have been poached across the country. The figures are constituted as follows; Kruger National Park 33; Limpopo 8, Mpumalanga 1, North West 1, Eastern Cape 2, Free State 1, Kwazulu-Natal 4 and Western Cape 1.

"It is important to note that in the Kruger National Park alone since January 2010 a total of 182 rhinos have been lost, 110 of which were lost in the eastern border of the park.

"Since January 2010 more rhinos have been lost in our provincial game parks the provinces in the eastern borders of South Africa (KZN, Limpopo and Mpumalanga) with 120 poached in these provinces.

"It has come to our attention that this is particularly because of criminal elements using the border between South Africa and Mozambique," she said.

South Africa and Mozambique have signed a historic agreement to drop fences between the two countries for biodiversity reasons in the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park.

Evidently, this has been exploited by criminal elements. Working together with her Mozambican counterpart, Molewa will address this concern.

"This bilateral with Mozambique will address among others how we should jointly strengthen and upgrade the security situation to arrest the scourge of rhino poaching.

"We also would want to share with our Mozambican counterparts our initiatives that allow collaboration between various security agencies to deal with poaching as a priority crime.

"The rhino poaching situation calls for drastic measures to be applied and the Minister is convinced that working together with our national security agencies, we should be able to strengthen all our national entry points like the OR Tambo International Airport and others," she said.

The minister is happy to note that the establishment of the NWCRU has led to a significant increase in the number of recorded arrests of suspects related to rhino poaching.

Since January 2010, 44 suspected poachers have been arrested throughout the country. Though Molewa is satisfied with the work being done by partners in the NWCRU, it is her view that more needs to be done and this can only be achieved through the collective efforts of all South Africans as well as the involvement of our SADC neighbours since poachers have no respect for any political boundaries.

"Our nation and continent's heritage is under threat from criminals who believe the irresponsible stories being perpetuated that one can get rich on rhino poaching while the reality is far from this, the only ones who make any money are the ruthless leaders of the syndicates," she said.

Daily Dispatch 05 March 2011

Poachers have struck again in the Eastern Cape after the carcasses of three white rhino were discovered with their horns removed in Dwesa Nature Reserve on the Wild Coast on Thursday.

This brings the number of animals found poached in the reserve since the beginning of the year to four, after a rhino carcass was discovered on February 19 with its horn removed.

Speaking to the Dispatch on Friday, Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) CEO Sybert Liebenberg said the discovery of the first animal had prompted a search for the remaining rhino in the reserve.

“We have been searching the entire park with the help of up to 25 rangers and a helicopter, and discovered the three carcasses early (Thursday) morning,” said Liebenberg. “The thick vegetation in Dwesa and heavy rains of the past season significantly complicated the search.

“We are currently documenting the location and movements of the remaining rhinos.”

He said a a large joint operation between the agency and the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs, also known as the Green Scorpions, had been launched to locate and arrest the poachers.

Impregnate all the horns on all local stock with deadly toxins and post warning signs all over, then watch the users drop like flies. That should be enough 'intimidation'. If you cannot kill the demand, then cut off the supply. This is a workable and inexpensive solution .... cannot understand why it hasn't been sanctioned and implemented by govt.

Rhino deaths continue to mount
2011-03-14 19:18

Johannesburg - South Africa has already lost 71 rhinos to poaching this year, SA National Parks (SANParks) said on Monday.

"This figure encompasses fresh and old carcasses which have been found in the various parks and nature reserves countrywide," said SANParks CEO David Mabunda.

Most of the poaching, 46 rhinos, occurred in the Kruger National Park.

Rhino poaching figures are on the increase with 333 rhinos slaughtered in 2010 compared to 122 killed in 2009 and 83 killed in 2008.

Mabunda said 64 suspected rhino poachers had already been arrested this year.

The Associated Press reported in February that so far this year nine poachers had been killed by park rangers.

The rangers were acting in self-defence to heavily armed poachers, according to Bandile Mkhize, chief executive of KwaZulu-Natal parks and a former top manager at South Africa's premier Kruger park.
