What kind of snake - Natal Green snake
Another snake to identify.- Not quite out in Nature, but in my TV room.
While sitting in my comfy recliner late one afternoon, sipping a spiked glass of water and ice, I spotted a green snake moving along the skirting board. I leapt up to capture it, but quick as a flash it was under my recliner and disappeared. I turned the chair upside down but saw nothing, not that there was much to see without having to undo most of the upholstery. So I took my seat sure that the snake was probably more scared of me I was of it. Spotted him a few days later on the carpet but once again fled to the innards of my chair. Next day it was sitting on my chair watching the news, and this is when I got a few photos. Days later I finally caught it and relocated it to an overgrown corner of the garden. Sorry the photos aren’t to good but the snake was not happy with my presence.
What is it? Again I thought a spotted bush snake, or Natal green snake?

Harold, I'm hitting the road to Durban tomorrow and was thinking about a visit to Greytown. But...er... would you rather mind if we had the GTG in Durban rather?

Re: What kind of snake (2)
I'm not an expert, but found two spotted bush snakes in a friend's garage about a week ago, and their coloring is a lot darker on the green than this one's. Also the eye is different.
So I think this is is a Natal Green. (Again, in my very humble opinion)
I'm also quite paranoid about snakes (and Swamb's is even worse) but we try not to kill these things anymore, rather get someone to remove them somewhere else.

The body is a little bit 'fat' but to me it looks like a female boomslang. The colouring is right.

I also think it is a boomslang wanting to be a couch potato. I believe they grow to an average length of 5feet. Does that sound like you guest?

Re: What kind of snake (2)
No where near 5 feet. Probably just over a metre.
Similarly the snake eating the frog was also about a metre, that's why I did not think it was a boomslang.
I'm on the prowl now to find more and get more pics.

Re: What kind of snake (2)
Hi,
This is a Natal Green snake (Philothamnus natalensis)
The Natal Green Snake is harmless to humans.
Adult Natal Green Snakes average 75cm to 90cm long but may reach a length of 1,3m.
They are a uniform bright green to turquoise-green above, with a paler greenish white or light yellow belly. Juveniles may have dark crossbars on the forebody.
They are often misidentified as the Green Mamba.
They occur along the northern coastal areas of KZN and the adjacent interior as well as southern Mozambique.
They are alert and diurnal. When captured they will inflate their neck and bite viciously. Captured individuals soon calm down.
They prey on frogs and geckos.

Re: What kind of snake (2)
Harold, its nose seems too blunt for a Boomslang. I'd go for Natal Green based upon the pictures posted by the other guys.

Harold, I will never come and visit you not after the above - we can rather go to a pub .... Daar is nie 'n manier ek gaan sit gou weer op daai bank nie. Ek sal hom 'n paar ekstra strepe gee wat dalk die patroon van die materiaal kan benadeel. Ek het klaar besluit ek gaan nou vir my 'n nuwe troeteldier kry.
