Zimbabwe poachers poison water!!!

Post by 0000DS »

Harare - Health fears were on the rise in Zimbabwe as poachers began poisoning water holes in many of the country's biggest game-parks, killing dozens of animals, reports said on Sunday.

Caroline Washaya-Mayo, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Manaagement Authority, was quoted by the Sunday Mail newspaper as saying that waterholes have been contaminated with the unidentified poison at the Gonarezhou, Mana Pools, Zambezi, Charara and Matsudona national parks.

"This is the only time we have had cases of poaching involving chemicals," Washaya-Mayo said, adding that poachers are using different techniques which are silent and do not raise suspicion.

Nine elephants, five lions, two buffaloes and several vultures are among the animals known to have died after drinking the water.

Authorities are concerned that the health of nearby villages may be at risk if residents accidentally drink the contaminated water and urged game rangers patrolling the areas to carry their own water.

In July, a local conservation group accused Chinese miners of using poisoned bread to kill a herd of elephants in the Zambezi Valley. Poisoned cabbage leaves were reportedly used to kill rhinos in south-eastern Zimbabwe last year.

Authorities in once game-rich Zimbabwe have recently stepped up their fight against poachers, killing three suspected rhino poachers in the Chipangayi Safari area, south-east of the country, on Tuesday.

They should each be given a bottle of that same water and then dropped off somewhere in the middle of the Namib to find their own way out on foot.

What happened to the idea of "injecting Cyanide" in the horns, so who ever consumes it will die. I read somewhere a farmer wanted to do something like this but first wanted to investigate the legallities around such a project. Well,.... cyanide might be extreme but something that will make them extremely sick will work as well. This should stop the users from supporting the sellers etc.
I haven't seen a rhino myself yet, hell at the rate these $%^&#$ are going even I wont see one.

William. If you've never seen a rhino, you need to get out more. (The bush that is) Magnificent creatures. You won't believe the size that the whites grow to.

Heard over the radio this morning that there are only about 100 Rhino left in South Africa?! This chemical that makes the users get sick needs to be put into operation fast! Somehow one must be able so stop this madness!

Racing Snake.... Its has been on the crds for a very long time. When we were ready to go the stork blessed us with another screamer. Now just waiting for her to be able to get the malaria shots. Cape Town does have its limitations when it comes to wildlife. And yes....I need to get out to the bush more often. Unfortunately my reality is that this can only happen once a year for such excursions.

what if the remaining rhinos are all dehorned by experienced vets, if the rhino don't have a horn it won't be killed. I can't see that anything else can save the rhino. Yes, they will look ugly without it, but we might save the species this way. This will be an exercise that will have to be done on a regular basis so the rhino can at all times be hornless and so not become a target to poachers. Each rhino must have satelite tracking so it can be monitored by the farmer or reserve of its where abouts.

We should also not support any products from these countries who trade in rhino horn. Don't buy their products.

that going to be very difficult Gideon.

It seems like everything is made in CHina, and that side of the world is the biggest culprits for consumption of rhino horn and pearlie

you are right, but what other solution is there to save the rhino? the farmers who lost rhinos will not even attempt to replace the ones that was poached, because of the value of the animal and the risk of poaching.
