Dog 0, Porcupine 2
Good friends of ours own a beautiful farm in the Western Cape. They have two lovely dogs who enjoy farm life to the fullest. Until they encountered a porcupine. Poor dogs, hope they learned their lesson.

Re: Dog 0, Porcupine 2
They are lucky they didnt lose their eyes !!!! you must get them to a vet to sterilize the wounds otherwise as Cassie states they will go septic very very quickly.......alternatively you can by a can of wound antiseptic from the vets, its a blue spray, they will look daft but they wont get infected whilst they are healing.....

Re: Dog 0, Porcupine 2
Shame, poor dogs! I'm sure the dogs will be just fine after their ordeal.
Both look like they have Staffie blood in them, so I doubt that they would have "learned their lesson". If they had, they would have aborted after the first or second piercing, but each one has a dozen or more quills. I'm afraid that they will re-engage a porcupine should they encounter one again.
The eyes are the most worrisome factor, they can loose them easily with a porcupine. The other wounds are neither here nor there on the serious scale and a vet visit is not necessary.
Muzzle the dog if you have to when removing the quills, but I doubt it will be necessary ... Staffies have a high threshold for pain. When removing the quills, turn (rotate) them at the same time as pulling so that it comes out clean and easy. Irrigate all the wounds with a 10% Hydrogen-Peroxide solution and allow to dry off a little before using the blue spray mentioned (Necro-spray). If you don't have Necro-spray, dabbing with gentian violet or Eusol will do. Be careful not to get peroxide or Necro-spray into their eyes.
The dogs will lick their wounds and their saliva has anti-bacterial properties, so don't stop them from doing this. However, once or twice daily peroxide treatment is required, especially of the wounds that they cannot get to.

Re: Dog 0, Porcupine 2
Heard an interesting story around a camp fire in Montagu not long ago. The guys said they have a dog which kills porcupines. Apparently the skull of a porcupine is very soft under the bunch of "hair" on top of his head. Somehow this dog figured it out. So he will run around the porcupine until he get a clear shot then grab that bunch of pens (which look like hair) and tear it off. Apparently the porcy dies almost instantly then.
