Re: Old pics from our area.
What happen when we get too much rain in the surrounding area. We get stranded on the farm, only tractor or 4x4 can get in and out.

Beautiful surrounding, what I can remember of Vioolsdrift is very hot there in the summer.

Beautiful! Even though it appears to be desolate, places like that have a strange attraction for me. Sadly I would have to get divorced before deciding to live there.

Yes Tony, for the last 3 weeks we have temp in the mid 40s. February is normally our hottest month. I have been here when it has been in the early 50s. But at least the humidity is very low.Legend35-ZN wrote:Beautiful surrounding, what I can remember of Vioolsdrift is very hot there in the summer.

Hey Andy, your vote and the Hilux vote outnumber Swambo, so no problem.Mud Dog wrote:Beautiful! Even though it appears to be desolate, places like that have a strange attraction for me. Sadly I would have to get divorced before deciding to live there.

Great photos, Roger. I had to search for Vioolsdrif on Google Earth to see where it is, the very barrenness pf the area is its main attraction!

Yes Tony am going to Port Nolloth for easter weekend.Legend35-ZN wrote:And what a contrast when you drive down to Port Nollith.
Yes Eric, it is very barren, but one must drive in the veld after some rain and then the magic appears before your eyes. The amount of small plant life that just grows from nothing, could only be from the hand of God. That is one of the reasons the the wife and I love to ride on weekends and explore the world up here. I will look for some photos that a friend of mine took of the plant life up here. He works for the Saps in the stock theft dept and is forever in the veld.Family_Dog wrote:Great photos, Roger. Re: Old pics from our area.
Found these pics, they are natural holes in the rock face that fill with rain water and the locals pump the water out when they graze their sheep in the area. These holes are much bigger than they look in the pics as they can water a herd of about 400 sheep for about 3 weeks from them. These holes are about 2 km from the tar road (N7) and can be seen if you know where to look. They are on the opposite side of the road to Swart Kop mine about 22 km from Vioolsdrift.
The other pic of the pit was dug by my father in law in the 1970s and still has water in it today. The amazing thing about this pit is that it on the top of one of the hills and quite a track to reach it. They water goat at this hole.
When the pit was dug he had only a old Datsun 1500 bakkie to get there and in later years a 1400 Nissan bakkie. This does not sound so bad until one goes there.

Re: Old pics from our area.
The last two pics look like seperate pits, yet both have those white moths / butterflies in them. I realise that there will still be insects, birds and fauna about in a barren area such as that, but those butterflies look strangely out of place.
