Secluded/Secret Unofficial Camp Sites

Post by Giovann »

Hi

I've always wondered if there are any places in the western cape where you can just gooi a bag of wood in the back, drive through, find a clearing and pitch a tent, or is all the open land in the province fenced off and privately owned in one or another.

Anyone know of such gems or is it all just designated resorts and such?

Info like this Giovann, is secretly whispered in hushed tones amongst the inner circle only.

But keep your eyes on your PM's, you might get lucky. :subscribed:

You summed it up :

- Government land, with no trespassing (we cant camp, but others may squat ...)

- Private land ... here you need to know the land owner .....

I do recall a gent out Ceres way that had a bush camp on his farm ... would like to get his details again.

Spoke to a Namibian farmer a while back about this very topic .... FINE when they know you, just not interested when they dont know you ... just too many people that mess it up for the rest of us ...

As a keen photographer, and with a fully kitted rig, we are always on the look out for a secluded getaway ..... for night photography you MUST be far away from all the lights ....

Haha I would kill for one of those PM's... Its sad that none of nature reserves allow you to do this, nothing clears the mind quite like being out in the wilderness covered with only a blanket of stars. Driving along, looking to the left and right of the national roads gives you that explorers itch when see all the pristine open land and mountains!

But i suppose as you say some have messed it up for the rest of us, but must be so awesome lay down some tracks on a beach, random forest or mountain range!

I have a friend that had a farm outside Heidelberg Cape. Looking from the N2 you see a cell phone mast right on the ridge - that was his land.

Now imagine bush camping on that ridge, looking right out onto Witsand when the air is clear .....

Yet he never allowed people to camp there. From the risk of a veld fire to the hassle of campers ariving late ...

At least I did get to drive up there in my 4x4 :)

There's a place called Brakkie se Veldkombuis outside Loeriesfontein. Google the name and you'll find some of my photos. If you need a contact number send me a PM.
