SA Ivory Auction

Post by Harold »

Wildlife Associations are vehemently against the auction of Ivory, as they believe that this will lead to an increase in poaching. I fail to see the rationale to this argument. Surely if more ivory is available the less reason to poach?

In todays age and problems, I do not believe that there is much value in this stuff, I know that certain area's are over populated by these animals, however I am not a hunter thus I have nothing futher to say!!!

Harold, I agree with you, but the problem is that many African governments used to "legally" wipe out thousands of these majestic animals for their ivory. The governments were fulfilling the role of the poachers and since the blanket ban on the sale of ivory, they have turned back to tourism and conservation.

The only way I can see legal ivory trade is if an independant commission is set up with representatives from different countries. Member states and parks would then have to apply for permits to cull elephants and the commission would send a team to assess if their really is a need for this. Only after this should a permit be issued and the ivory be allowed to be sold on the open market.

maybe I'm getting this wrong, but this is what SA did.
they actually wanted to sell more, but the association who gave them a permit to do so, told them they could selll a couple million less that what their stockpile was.
They still made a good couple mil out of the sale.
I would tend to be in favour of this controlled selling of ivory, especially if it goes back to conservation, thus by flooding the market with legal ivory poaching has no demand. But one has to wonder how much is actually going back to conservation and how much is going into the 11% increase gov officials getting
