Like the serval cat (although in a zoo) pic - normally a shay creature and seldom seen. Last one’s I have seen was in Kruger and it was early in the morning (Outside Pretoriuskop) and the other was at around 23:00 at Lower Sabie- next to the fence.

The snake looks like a boomslang?

Agreed on the Serval, we once saw one, and it ran like mad - before we could get lense off it was gone... The snake is a boomslang, taken at Jhb Zoo.

Thanks to all for the notes and acknowledgments on the pics, it is appreciated, we are off to Pilansberg this weekend (Saturday), and will see about posting some more on for all to view.

When my fam and I were visiting JHB over the festive season, we visited JHB zoo for a day. All I can say is WOW! We had 6 kids in the gang who enjoy every moment of the tour, even though the dad's were poop'd from pushing them around in the push cars! Cape Town doesn't have anything like it(other than the aquarium and World of Birds / Tygerberg zoo is a non starter) and that's sad... and to top it all off everyone(from Pretoria I think) was saying that Pretoria zoo is even better! We'll visit this zoo on our next Gauteng excursion!

Did you have any furniture left?

Come tell us more. My youngest Corné has an imaginary lion cub friend and when I showed him these pics he showered me with questions

If memory serves me correctly the mother developed some kind of infection that affected her milk production. She was rejecting the cubs which then had to be hand reared. The East London Zoo staff cared for them during the day and got volunteers from the "Friends of the Zoo" association to help out at nights. We would take it in turns, rotating nights amonst the volunteers, collecting the cubs from the zoo each evening after work and returning them again in the morning. We were supplied with bottles and a milk substitute that was apparently specially formulated because of the needs of such fast growing animals. We could see the difference in them from one visit to the next which was only four or five days. It lasted only about 4 weeks when they were feeding well on their own (solids) and did'nt require and special care.

Although very playful at times ( they slept a lot and tired quickly in the early stages) the furniture survived, thanks to some old blankets.

One thing more, young as they were, those little buggers could bite!

The Black Panther in my opinion is one of the most beautiful wild cats along with it's cousin the Leopard, and the Bengal Tiger. Also rather rare these days, are panthers.
Nice pics.

Nice pic Thuys, magnificent creatures both, and it shows the sheer size of the Eland, which being behind the Zebra, in perspective should look smaller if of similar size. I recall when I was still a little green at hunting, I had this idea of bagging myself an Eland (world's biggest antelope - males can achieve almost 700kg's), but after taking my first Kudu (at 273kg) I dare say I had a change of heart. The Kudu was already an arduous task for five grown men to recover from the bush. Incidentally, they both belong to the same antelope classification of oryx.
But you knew all that already ...

In actual fact the eland in the picture is still quite young and not fully grown yet. He was about the same size as the zebra. The pic was taken on an "uphill" with the eland higher up than the zebra, thus the illusion of it being bigger.
