Vodacom donates vehicle

Post by Niel »

Vodacom Foundation has officially handed over a vehicle to a project that seeks to halt the decline of Southern Ground Hornbill, one of South Africa's vulnerable bird species.

The vehicle is being used to gather valuable data for the Ground Hornbill Research and Conservation Project, based at the Mabula Game Reserve, near Bela Bela in the Limpopo Province.

Included in the official handover, which took place on Saturday,

31 January were three incubators, monitoring cameras, a laptop and a generator. The incubators are used in the rearing of the Ground Hornbill chicks, while the generator provides a vital back-up electricity supply to ensure the chicks are kept warm during power failures.

One of the main activities of the project is the harvesting, hand-rearing and re-introduction into the wild of Ground Hornbill chicks. Artificial nests have also been installed at various sites, and an active educational programme is underway to communicate the importance of these birds to local communities.

Well done Vodacom! I see on the http://www.mabulagroundhornbillconserva ... index.html website that they are looking for people/organisations to sponsor some of these artificial nests. How's about we each club in a few bucks and sponsor one/two/ten/50/100 of these nests and in that way also make a small contribution to the conservation of these magnificent birds? See here:
