Keeping tabs on vultures to keep them safe

Post by Niel »

It takes a certain kind of person to go around stalking vultures – and KwaZulu-Natal wildlife ecologist Sonja Kruger is that person. Kruger is capturing vultures in order to fit them with satellite tracking devices, so researchers have a better idea of where the birds spend their time. Knowing their movements will significantly help these birds that are often deliberately poisoned by farmers, electrocuted on power lines or poached for muti.

How can you help? If you plan to visit or live in the Drakensberg/Lesotho region, keep an eye out for yellow wing tags fixed to the upper wing near the shoulder of the bird. Report any sighting to skruger@kznwildlife.com
