Karoo National Park to introduce lions to mark 30th annivery

Karoo National Park, situated near Beaufort West, celebrated its 30th Anniversary yesterday with the announcement that lions would be introduced to the Park in 2010.

Speaking on behalf of South African National Parks (SANParks) executive management, Dr. Nomvuselelo Songelwa made the announcement at an event held on 29 October 2009 to commemorate 30 years of the Park’s existence after its proclamation on 12 September 1979.

“The introduction of lions will bring back a historically-occurring species to the Great Karoo ecosystem,” said Songelwa.

Songelwa added that the introduction would take place in the first half of 2010 once measures had been put in place to ensure the safety of visitors walking around the Park’s rest camp. The decision had been made after careful consideration of the viability of introducing this top predator, taking into account the numbers of prey species most likely to be targeted by lions in the Park.

Karoo is een van my gunsteling parke, ons bly altyd ten minste 2 nagte as ons Kaap se kant toe gaan. Baie goeie nuus die, wilde leeus in die Karoo! Ons gaan die Desmber vier aande oorbly om die nuwe 4x4 roetes uit te probeer en baie te stap. Ongelukking gaan die leeus nog nie daar wees nie (maar sal 'n mens nog daar kan stap?).

Ek sien daar is n artikel in die Dec 09 uitgawe van SA4X4 oor die nuwe "4x4" roete - is vanplan om die park te besoek voor die einde van die somer

Ek dink dis n goeie idee, met die nuwe wette is dit mos onmoontlik om van oortollige staf ontslae te raak!

Ek sal ook vir Neil saamvat, hy kan nie skree nie, so hy sal maar sand in oom leeu se oe moet skop, dan klim ek die boom!
