KNP tightens its anti-poaching operations

Post by Niel »

Good on the SANPARKS

The Kruger National Park (KNP) Rangers and the South African National Parks (SANParks) Environmental Crimes Investigations (ECI) units yesterday (27 November 2009) installed high technology invisible tracking devices to some of the Kruger rhinos based at Malelane and Stolznek areas.

This according to Mr William Mabasa, Head of PR & Communications at Kruger National Park, who said this is one of the many park’s strategies that are put in place to intensify anti-poaching efforts after losing 41 rhinos between January and October this year.

According to Mabasa the park started experiencing an increase in poaching activities last year when 36 rhinos were lost in the hands of poachers. “The whole country and all other SADC countries are currently losing a high number of rhinos due to poaching, however, since Kruger has the highest number of rhino population in the region, it turns out to be the number one poachers target, hence the park is stepping up its effort to deal with poaching within its own boundaries.”

He said SANParks is currently investing R5.2 million towards its anti-poaching strategy of which amongst other things fifty-seven new field rangers have been appointed in October and deployed to the areas identified as hot spots.

The latest state of the art night vision equipment has been purchased for night deployment activities “As an emphasis to the seriousness, we want to own the night as well as it occurs that most poaching activities takes place during the night, said Mabasa.”

An additional Bantam aircraft and motorbikes for all Section Rangers were also purchased. The conditions of service for the Field Ranger have been reviewed and they have now been declared six day workers. The old radio communication system for the Rangers is currently being replaced by a more modern one.

“We are extremely delighted with all these efforts that our law enforcement personnel is putting against poaching and we believe that these measures are already bearing fruits as 31 poachers have already been arrested since January 2009 with several firearms and stolen rhino horn confiscated,” said Mabasa.

“It is also worth noting that there has been a marked drop in the poaching along the eastern boundary of the KNP over the past four months. However, Stolznek and Malelane ranger sections are still regarded as poaching hot spots; hence these tracking devices are brought to these areas.

Recently park Rangers arrested eight suspects and recovered four firearms after some poaching activities have occurred in the area. “We are also upgrading the road network system in the area which will allow easy access to problematic areas.”

According to Mabasa as compared to other African countries, Kruger National Park represents one of the successful rhino conservation stories with an estimate of 12 000 white rhino while the number continues to increase.

Stolznek and Malelane Ranger sections are found in the South Western areas of the park between Pretoriuskop and Berg en Dal Rest Camps.

Yes, would like to assist myself but the poaching seems to be a bigger thing (hardly hear of it here) in the old TVL than down here in Cape.

I wonder if there are certain times of the year where poaching is more rife than other times, ie winter v summer or something like that. Or just all year round in general?

Poaching will remain a problem as long as there is a market for stuff like rhino horn, ivory etc. .... education of the masses might be a big part of the answer to this one.

No Andy, I don't think you'll get anywhere. It's not about education, it's part of the culture in the far east, like this bull-killing thing with the zulu's.

Just like the zulu's will keep doing it irrespective of the quite obvious cruelty, the manne in the far east will use rhino horn until there are no rhino's left.

Two more poachers arrested in the KNP

The Kruger National Park's (KNP's) Rangers and SANParks’ Environmental Crime Investigation Unit (ECI) arrested two suspected rhino poachers in the Pretoriuskop section of the Kruger National Park yesterday (13 December 2009). An R1 rifle and ammunition were recovered during the operation. During this anti-poaching operation a wounded adult female white rhino was found wandering in the area. The animal eventually died of gun shot wounds which she received shortly after being found.

Rangers were on their normal daily patrols during early Sunday morning when they heard a gunshot in the area. They immediately summoned help from the Environmental Crime Investigation unit who reacted immediately by helicopter. The area was cordoned off and search operation started immediately. During the operation four suspects were flushed out of hiding. Two of the suspects were immediately arrested and two managed to escape arrest because the area is quite lush and thick. The incident has been reported to the South African Police Service who are assisting with the follow-up investigation.

The KNP Managing Executive, Mr Abe Sibiya, in his reaction to the news said, “We are very saddened by this spate of rhino killing which is going on, not only in the Kruger but in the rest of the country. However we wish to commend our Rangers for the job well done in arresting the two suspects immediately and we hope that it is just a matter of time before they apprehend the remaining suspects.”

Rhino poaching has become a major problem in the country since last year. The KNP alone has lost 48 white rhino and 1 black rhino since January 2009. During the same period 27 suspects believed to be linked to the rhino poaching incidents have been arrested.. “We have strategies in place to fight this scourge which we believe are working for us and our Rangers are extremely determined to flush all the poachers out of this park without failure. This is a war that we must win; no matter how much it cost us,” Mr Sibiya added.

Whilst we in the KNP have lost the majority of the rhino in the country so far this year, there has been a rather dramatic increase in rhino poaching within the provinces around the country as well.

Perhaps it's time for some enterprising biologist/biochemist to reproduce a synthetic version of the horn that replicates the exact chemical / mineral make-up and put that out in the Asian market. Could well end up making a small fortune!

Bietjie van 'n update:

Oor die naweek van 19/12 is blykbaar een van die "groot" manne in die sindikaat bymekaar gemaak en aangekeer. Hy is verbind met 8 onlangse renoster killings in die Kruger en rondom.

GOOD STUFF!!!!!

exactly FD.

when these poachers are caught, they should be hunted and scalped and left for the vultures.
A nice vacation in cosy SA prison is more of an incentive to a foreign / domestic poacher than deterant.

The latest on this topic from SAPARKS.

14 Rhinos lost

"The Chief Executive Officer of South African National Parks (SANParks), Dr David Mabunda, announced yesterday (21 January 2010) that the fight against poaching is heating up with the recent arrest of more suspected poachers in the Kruger National Park (KNP).

He further announced that with these successes have also come the sad news of more rhinos continuing to be poached across the country.

Thus far, 46 arrests have been made since 2008, with 17 having been made in 2008, 29 arrests in 2009 and two arrests in the first two weeks of January 2010. Investigations are continuing, with a number of leads on some more suspects, and the investigating team predicts that more arrests will be made soon.

SANParks has in the last three years (2008-2010) lost 93 rhinos; 36 in 2008, 50 in 2009 and seven (7) in 2010.

The final recorded figure for South Africa for 2009 was 122, with the most losses being in the KNP (50), Gauteng province (7), Limpopo province (16), Mpumalanga province (6), North West province (10), Eastern Cape province (3), Free State province (2) and KwaZulu-Natal province (28).

In the first two weeks of 2010 seven (7) rhinos were lost in North West province and seven (7) in the KNP.

SANParks also wants to extend a heartfelt gratitude to a tourist that cannot be named for her own safety, who assisted SANParks in discovering one of the rhinos which were poached in recent weeks. The tourist, upon seeing a hornless rhino wondering by the tourist road, immediately called the authorities to inform them of this sighting. The poachers are still at large but SANParks has strong leads on the suspects.

“We would like to encourage our guests to continue to be vigilant while driving in the park and report any suspicious incident, movement or behaviour because their presence is vital in the gathering of information and ultimate reduction of this assault on our wildlife,” said Dr Mabunda.

“We are not forgetting upstanding members of our communities who have in the past assisted us in foiling the plans of these would be poachers and even arresting them. We are saying that we cannot finish this task without your invaluable help. We need all the information you can provide on these criminals so that we can put them away for a long time,” he added.

Dr Mabunda also indicated that plans are at an advanced stage to bring in members of the military to patrol the international borders of the KNP as well as to camp out in specific areas of the park.

“South Africans must realise that we are not dealing with your ordinary petty criminal here, these poachers are members of well-resourced syndicates and are also involved in chilling crimes like human trafficking, arms smuggling, prostitution and drug trafficking. They are dangerous criminals. South Africans throughout the country must be on the lookout for these criminals as some of them may be your neighbour in your quiet neighbourhood far from the parks, ” said Dr Mabunda."

"Media Release: KNP tightens its anti-poaching operations

KNP Rangers, Veterinary Services
and ECI team work around one of
the rhinos marked with an
electronic tracking device

Hi Eric, thanks

hey Andy, That's why I am here, to try and link all the clubs together in various conservation initiatives (well and because i'm a closet hilux lover, my first 4x was a '88 4Y single cab).

There are a lot of 4x clubs doing lots of things out there, some are successful and some haven't got to where they want to be, some successful examples are the LCCSA's desert lion project, mana pools project, jeep clubs adoption of some vultures at a rehab cenre near Hartebeespoort dam , the 4WDCSA WC efforts with cape nature, 4x4Community involvement with FOPS at borakalalo & Kgaswane, the AAWDC's initiative with the endangered wildlife trust and then there are people in the industry like Tuffstuff who do a huge amount, the have become corporate sponsors to the EWT, taken on projects there, have their own tree planting initiatives and are willing to get involved with clubs to assist them in their endeavours.

Have a look at the latest leisure wheels, there is now something called "The Green pages", pages 74 to 77 inclusive, devoted entirely to environmental issues, watch out for next month's issue that will list all of Tuffstuffs projects, these pages are sponsored entirely by Tuffstuff, and we have access to them to get projects and appeals noted.

well at least MCM is doing some good in hermanus
guy got fined R8000 for being over his limit with steenbras last weekend.
But the mentality of people is what needs to change.
In last week, fish was running duk in Strand
One member of the angling forum I belong to, approached the one guy to ask what he caught.
He has 2 kob, 2 geelbek, 2 das, stumpnose, and over his qouta of elf.
The member asked him if he knew the limit of elf, and he snarled and replied 'Die see is mos vol vis'.
It's mentality like that , that makes me want to hang up my rod.
Soon nothing will be left in the sea, en dan wil mense met kop in die hande sit.
