No meat = Botswana

Post by OOOOMS »

Hi, just had news from (Hennie Jackson) Henniej2, who is on his way with a group of friends to Mana Pools travelling via Botswana.

Hennie called me last night advising that all their meat and fruit was confiscated once entering Botswana via Martins Drift border post.

So if you are heading that way soon, it's a no, no! They were searched thouroughly from back to front.....no chance!

When we entered from Zimbabwe side they took all our meat, veggies, fruit and eggs. What we couldn't eat on the spot they took.

Just got back fromZim and Bots. We only took cooked spare ribs to braai. No problem. They're trying to stop a fruit fly infestation from spredding so took all tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers etc at Martins drift. Bought new tomatoes at Francis town. Taken away after Nata. Bought new in Kasane. Taken on coming back from Vic falls. Don't take raw meat or fresh fruit when travelling in Bots, they will be confiscated. Resupply when you are close to your campsite, where possible. Kasane has good meat, fruit vegies etc at the Spar. Cooked ribs, tinned beans etc are a good stopgap when meat is not available. Drinks were not even looked at.

I did a road trip in December and January total distance was 9253 Km I traveled thru the northern Cape, Namibia entered close to Upington worked my way to the North all the way to Rundu then we went to Botswana and out at Martins drift I was never stopped or even asked if I had meat with me. (I was Lucky) As most on the forum say they will take your stuff depends on what their rule will be for that moment you show up. That is the thing bothering me the most, today you are allowed and tomorrow not so to ensure you wont have any problems just don't take a chance unless you are willing to turn around (if they are going to allow you) or just give away all your food. I really love to travel thru Africa but their rules is really getting to me these days. I support the Idea to stay in SA and explore it, there is really so much to see and just as beautiful as the rest of Africa if not better at least you have a network here that can support you should you need help.

There is plenty of meat available in the larger town of Bots, no real nead to schlep it up from ZA......

We normally take for 3 days from here only, just in case  So 'if' there is a problem at the border or Vet check-points, at least it's not the end of the world.

Also good idea to check with BTB before departing, as the situation can change overnight:
