Advice on hilux 2.2L price please
Hi there
Planning a trip to Ethiopia and back and have an option to buy a 2.2L Hilux Raider, 4Y engine, 1992 model, 208 000km on the clock with the following extras:
150L petrol tank
30L water tank
Dual battery
Alluminium canopy
Raised suspension
33" tyres
Good tyres
2 way radio
Snorkel
Any ideas on what a vehicle like this is worth?
Thanks, appreciate any advice/comments.

I'm afraid the scarcity of SFA's have thrown the theoretical pricing out of the window.
I think you've found yourself in a market condition similar to niche property, ie. if it's a 'willing buyer, willing seller' scenario you've jumped the 1st major hurdle - the rest is up to your negotiation skills :!:
Just don't hold out for too long, these vehicles sell like hot cakes :!:
Best o' luck

Re: Advice on hilux 2.2L price please
Thanks for the resposnes. We've found these vehicles quite difficult to price, some seem very affordable while others are more expensive. It appears as though the sellers have a price in mind and simply aim for that.
Forgot about the RWC, thanks for the reminder.
This vehicle really does seem to have everything, the guy is asking for R90k.

PS... Lara
To further illustrate my point (which is quite valid I think cos' the following played out in the S.suburbs of Cape Town):
I was chased (and caught) by an Isuzu driver who tried very hard to persuade me to part with my Toy.
My Toy has NONE of those accessories it is for all intents and purposes Standard 1988 SFA Hilux DC. (just 30mm lift, 31" tyres, mettallic paintwork)
The guy's starting price was R55K then once he figured out I was not a willing seller he tried to coax me with R75K :!:
Thing is I'm NOT a willing seller :!: :!:
I paid R40K 3 years ago - I would have paid more was it not for the fact that he was a friend and his athritus got the better of him :)
So, good luck with the negotiations :!:
Cheers

Re: Advice on hilux 2.2L price please
I paid R47k for 89 model 3 years ago and I've spent R52k on it...
I'd start your price on R45k ish and then find out how much it would cost you to put the extras on....
I think R80 to R85 would be reasonable.

Re: Advice on hilux 2.2L price please
We had a chat around extras on a SFA (any 4x4 for that matter) and the seller will do their best to work the extras into the price. Fact is if I but I want the vehicle and not the accessories. Pls keep in mind that the seller won’t take out the OME suspension or long range tank..... but you should not pay the new price for the extras either. R90K is off the mark according to me around R75K sounds closer to ok for me. PM me your requirements and let me see if I know of a vehicle that is close to what you are looking for.

Here is my view...... and my 2c worth.husteds wrote:Hi there

1992 Hilux - stock std - worth R50 - R55k......
150L petrol tank - worthless, jerry cans are easily come by
30L water tank - 20lt plastic can will do
Dual battery - Worth R1500
Alluminium canopy - Depending, but you can pick up a canopy for around R4500
Raised suspension - worth a fortune, value zero
33" tyres - all good 4x4's come with a set of tyres
Good tyres - as above
2 way radio - pretty worthless, unless you have someone to talk too.
Snorkel - worth a fortune, value zero.
In sum total, if the vehicle was in good nick, I'd say R60k is a good price...... anything more, then it's over rated for your application......
...... and I'm sticking my neck out here, but use this as a basic guide line.......
pre 91 - R30k - R49k
92-94 - R45k - R60k
94-97 - R55k - R70k
You can add between 10k and 20k for extras like
new engines, duel battery (depending on age of battery) RTT, after market BB/SS/TB, winch etc.
Things like, snorkel, long range tanks, body lifts, 33" tyres, water tanks, are nice to haves, but IMHO do not add any "real" value to an overland vehicle.....

I think Rich has a point about the willing buyer, willing seller because we've missed 2 like this that have sold quickly for 90k now.

Re: Advice on hilux 2.2L price please
I think you need to allow for the 'X' factor. I agree the extras are not worth much in a sale, but the way the vehicle was looked after/cared for does add to your basic price. :?
I also dont think that the year 90-98 for an SFA makes such a huge difference in the price you can ask, as a well looked after, clean 1990 can be worth a lot more than a 1998 model that has been around the block a few times. Also except for the different engines they are mechanically just about identical. :? Just be careful not to make an emotional purchase, be realistic about what you want, and what you are willing to pay and tell the chancers (there are LOTS out there) out there to take a hike :D

Hi Lara
Thought I would let you know I bought this vehicle on Sunday afternoon for R87000.00
The vehicle had everyhing I would have put on any way, so this was a bonus. This is how I see it. These figures were just confirmed with me now.
Vehicle cost R 55000.00
Alucab Canopy R14500.00
Rims and tyres R16000.00
Alucab Pull-out R3000.00
Snorkel R 2750.00
N/L dual battery system R4000.00 the dual battery alone costs R1500.00 (I own a Supa Quick )
Total Cost R95250.00
Then also bare in mind that the vehicle has got a full service history with all invoices upto its 208000 KM. This vehicle you buy with your heart and not your head. After driving it home I realized I would have given him R90000.00 for it. Hope you don't lose the next one.

Not ready to sell yet
Re: Advice on hilux 2.2L price please
When it comes to the value of a SFA Hilux, there really is no definite guide. It is all related to demand. And we all know that SFAs are high in demand. If your SFA is in prestine condition, like so many of the SFAs here are, then the value soars. The thing is, like many of you know, that it costs money and time to keep an old SFA in pristine condition.
Sure, you can pick up SFAs for as little as R40K, but go and have a good look at it, and you will soon realise that there is probably another R40K to be spent to get it back to good nick. This will not even include the small extras like new seats, good sound system, alarm, central locking, rubberising, and other small accessories that make our Hiluxs as good as they are.
You get SFAs, and then you get SFAs!!!!!!!! I searched for a long time before buying mine.
My Hilux has so far cost me over R130K to make it as special as it is (and still spending - just had a digital temp. gauge installed this week), and I will never sell it for that much (won't get that much you see), but trust me, I will never sell it for R75K. The chickens can rather sleep in it then. Keep in mind I don't have chickens, but will get some if need be.
I advertised my Supralux for R110,000 and I have had around 20 people to come and look at it, all wanting to sell their souls to own it.
The only problem with the SFA is that it is not easily financable, thus the more you spend on yours and subsequently ask, the longer you will wait for the right buyer.
