You need to upload a lot of beer in the back and you'll be fine...

Hi Pampoen,
The Gabriel Safari's are crap, but don't worry too much about them, just drive slowly. I don't think you have to worry too much about spares as well, you'll be able to buy and replace if and when something breaks on the way. No need to carry al that weight if you have more important stuff to load (like beer). Maybe (big maybe) a set of spanners to "maak los" and "maak vas"!
The most important ingredient for this trip will be the right attitude, which it seems you have already!!
Enjoy,
Chris

I always make sure I have a container with drinkable water and an extra jerry can or two and the most common tools you might need and a gas cooker and bottle (gas)

Sounds nice, If I had time and mony, I would join.
I'm a Hilux fan, I think it will not brake, even with safari shocks. The only thingyou will need allot of is petrol, or money for it!
Is the hilux still standard-suspension, exhaust, airfilter?

ya ive replaced the airfilter with a freeflow type one but otherwise the springs are still original and the exhaust aswell.

I would then just make sure that airfilter catches all the dust, otherwise you may damage the engine on the long run with dust coming in little by little.

Luke the freeflow types you refer to is what kills engines. Those things do not keep dust out only insects birds large stones and little pedestrians selling curios next to the road . Put your Donaldson's cyclonic filter back before you leave.

of course that would suck having my poor engine die on me half way there   a snorkle would not be as effective as a freeflow breather would it?

There is the argument that a snorkel helps ram cold clean air into the engine thus helping with the fuel efficiency and make the engine run cooler. I'm not sure about that part but I can tell you is that the snorkel do keep your airfilters cleaner for much longer than usual. If it will cure the problem Bennie mentioned, I don't know but it will surely make a world of difference. The cheaper solution would be to revert to the original airfilter. :)

Hi Pampoen,
Gabriel Kubus or Monroe Gas Magnum's should be OK. Safari shocks have a very short life. Shocks are important, for road holding and to prevent the rest of the vehicle from shattering to pieces (also yourself). Tyres are also important, don't skimp on them, a burst tyre can be extremely expensive. How's the brakes? Steering should be OK. Look at the safety stuff, don't let an adventure turn into tragedy. (sorry if I sounds like a wet sock, but keep safety in mind). The rest you can repair "if" it breaks.
Cheers,
Chris

Pampoen,
I've attached my spares, tools and packing lists for you. Use them as a starting point and make your own lists...
Make sure your vehicle is good condition before you go and you'll be fine!!!
It's not always safe to sleep next to the road. Find a place with no Cow poo, and drive a few hundred meters off the road and hide behind some bushes....
Good luck and let us know how it was!!!

Could not agree more with Chris about the Gabriel shocks. Invest in a OME or Ironman suspension and your trip wil not be so (SKUD SKUD) Ok you asked if the SFA will get you to Dar.... :| It will not only get you there it will bring you back as well 8)
