D4D Engine Replacement Advice

Post by Dan4D »

Hi All

So today one of the conrods in my bakkie decided to break free from the engine block :( :( How much should I expect to cough up to get it running again? Mileage is 300,000km, 3L D4D. Any advice is appreciated

Regards
Dan

Got a quote of R32 000 for an imported engine. Is this the going rate?

I would be more interested in why the conrod decided to left its home.
my friends 2007 fortuner also recently send a conrod through the head. his is was also around 300 000 kms but I have a suspicion his hasn't been serviced for a while but that cant be confirmed.
he can "apparently" get an imported engine for 10 grand - also not yet confirmed.

I do service my bakkie every 10,000 km. The bakkie did fall on its side in December, I lodged an insurance claim and the panelbeater said that there was nothing wrong with the engine. I don't know if this contributed to the failure? Would comprehensive insurance normally cover this sort of thing?

If you can prove that the damage occurred when it fell over, Insurance will pay for new engine.

Not a bad price I've seen them up to R36k

Bit of a gamble but the cheapest route to follow

Obviously the engine was running when it fell over. How long did the engine stay on after falling over? I think the big end bearings got starved of oil and causing damage to them. These D4D engines do not simply and randomly put a conrod through the engine block at 300 000 ks.

The engine was running for a few seconds when the vehicle fell over. What ***** me off is that I paid a massive excess (R10K) to due to the vehicle falling over, and now the insurance claims that the failure is not accident related. Anyway, can anybody recommend a good mechanic/workshop in the Johannesburg area?

You need to take it to our "resident Hilux PB" Hennie, in Heidelberg. He has fixed both Riaan & Cassie's SFAs after they both 'fell over' and his pricing cannot be beaten.

Refer viewtopic.php?f=21&t=25135 for examples of his work.
