Need Some Advice Choosing A KZTE

Post by pampoen »

Hi guys I am looking for a good condition 4x4 DC KZTE. What should I be looking for when it comes to these vehicles, specifically the engine, any weak spots I would need to know about? Most of the bakkies I have looked at are over the 200 000km mark, how many more KM would I expect from a KZTE at this mileage?

My last lux had the kz motor and had close to 500k on it when I sold it. Just look for something with a solid service history, oil and filters every 5k and she'll go forever.

Thanks Luke, And for the ZA guys what does a set of 4 Injectors go for? Also I do know that the fuel pump is ECU controlled and can give issues, I read somewhere on this forum, that Hoppy does a colt diesel pump conversion, does he still those?

Thanks in advance

Finding a good Kz is getting very hard. To convince the owner to sell is virtually impossible!!

Injectors is quite cheap - should be way less than R5k per set.

I would rather fork out to have the original pump reconditioned than bastardise the truck. Each to his own.

Heads could crack after 200 000km. Maybe use the search function and search 'cracked head'?

A 4x4 is merely a machine that enables you to get stuck further away from civilization.

Got my KZTE 9 months ago 304 000 km young. Head been replaced with AMC head 285 000 km. Currently on 315 000 km any going like a Boeing!!!

Replaced suspension bushes, Idler arm on steering assembly, shocks and tires. Recon prop-shaft. Got EGT's down with Cirus cooler and Dastec chip. Also free flow exhaust and filter. Doing 110kw and runs way cooler.
Done 2000 km trip in December without any issues. High temperatures!

Expect to pay anything from R120k upwards for a decent one. Spent a couple and you will have a bakkie for life!

Hi guys unfortunately I was one that sold my 2003 KZTE on 30335, two days ago Had her for 7 years.
Issues with sideshafts back (imported diff) - both replaced cost= R16000
Issues with brakes, cant even remember how much I spent on brakes. Shuddered when applying brakes.
Left front locker dont want to disengage.
Ok very sad to sell her but finances didnt alow me to keep her.
Good news though upgraded now to a Legend 40 4x4 2010 Single cab
