Hello Hiluxers,
I own a 2010 3.0 D4D DC with 235 000km on the clock.
Auto, 4x4.
Generally speaking, I love the bakkie.
Have not had occasion to do any challenging 4x4 trails with it, and have not tested it on a dune. Will be undertaking a Namibia trip in May, 5 day dune trip, Van Zyls etc.
What is the ability of this engine on a long dune face?
Does it run out of breath?
I need to invest funds to upgrade the 4x4 status of the bakkie. Suspension, more suitable canopy, bash plates, perhaps a steel bumper.
But I am cautious to do so without understanding whether this engine has a proven track record of high mileage over landing.
We don't get our money back for upgrades and accessories, which I can live with if there is an horizon of at least another 200 000 km.
Thank you for your insights.
Best,
Will

a quick search on the forum will give you lots of hits on mileage done. See here as an example viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7890&hilit=mileage
Mine has done 310 000 ks now without any problems other than normal maintenance. Replaced the water pump twice, last time at 300 000ks due to starting a very slight leak, Clutch was replaced at 180 000 - OEM clutch issue, Injectors were replaced at 280 000 as a precaution (three were still in spec and one was going out of spec). I need to add that the 80% of the mileage was done in town driving.
I have always been surprised at my Bakkies ability to drive on sand. I have never played in the dunes so would not be in a position to comment on that. There will no doubt be guys who can chime in here.
You will always battle to recover what you spent on your bakkie in terms of upgrades regardless of whether it is brand new or older.

One of our work bakkies, we all use Hilux, is on 700 000km. No problems too date and nothing done apart from normal services.

I think it will struggle. If my experience in Dec 2016 is anything to go by. Not long but steep rutted sand/bush path... took about 6 attempts up there at 4000 rpm. A diesel should not be treated like this. Will J vd Merwe wrote: ↑Wed Mar 28, 2018 9:49 pm What is the ability of this engine on a long dune face?

Generally , sand and diesel don't go together.

Thanks Gents for your replies.
I agree, a diesel not built for pushing at high revs continuously.
I am not bothered about recovering my upgrade costs, its more a question of whether to invest in this particular higher mileage Hilux.
Cheers
