Picture of cars with different size of the tires
Hello!
I'm currently figuring out how big my off road tires are going to be.
Can you guys post different vehicles with different size of the tires?
31X10.50R15, seems ok?
What do you use and how low/high is your car?

Re: Picture of cars with different size of the tires
It depends what, where and how extreme you want to use your vehicle, how much you want or how much you can spend $$$$$$ on your truck, are you willing to cut the fenders?
Are you willing to fit fender flares to compensate for the wider tires, rims to suit the tires have to also be considered.
Has your vehicle got power steering?
What about the spares, where will you mount them?
Do you want bead lock rims, alloy or steel?
Thus answer some of these questions then they will help us to determine what size tire is required for your use, for example, you can fit 44" Mickey Thompson's baja claws on Classic 2 rims.
But..................

Alloy or steel doesn't matter.
From what I understand 31 is what most people are using on this forum?
How far can I go in width before I need flares?

Re: Picture of cars with different size of the tires
31 x 10.50 are about the max you can go, but if you go bigger say for example 33 x 1250 x 15 you will get rubbing behind the tires up against the wheel arch and possibly also rubbing up against the front and rear outer spring packs.
Some tires are rated as 31's or 32's but this is in fact not the actual size, they differ.
You must also remember that maybe you will consider a body lift at some stage, thus if you do, larger tires can also be fitted.

Though, I think it's pretty high already ( http://mavericktc.250free.com/DSC00893.jpg ) but with bigger tires it may not look so high anymore.
So, anyone got pictures of a hilux wearing 31x10,5 15/16"?

I am not sure if you know that but a lift that is obtained via new springs or leaves is referred to as a suspension lift and a body lift is when you add spacers in the existing body mountings to move the body and chassis apart thus lifting the bod while the chassis stay as it is.

Therefor I wrote "Body lift will be when I buy new suspension" meaning that I will do all at once.

This photo below shows you what 35 x 1550 x 15" Mickey Thompson baja claws which are mounted onto Mickey Thompson classic 2 alloy rims look like, we have also done a 80mm body lift, but no suspension lift yet, wheel spaces have also been fitted

Re: Picture of cars with different size of the tires
Seems I'm the odd one out here. I had 31x10.5s fitted for a couple of months, and finally threw them out in favour once more of the standard tyres & rims. The 31's gave me about 15mm additional height over the standard tyres, but road-holding was questionable, particularly when a strong side wind is blowing. Also, if you travel over flat rock (slate, like Slasto), the tyres have no grip to speak of and the vechile tends to slide if the rock slopes sideways. Negative fuel consumption figures too, and they stuck out further from the bodywork than I liked.
Solved all those problems by fitting 245's again!

Re: Picture of cars with different size of the tires
Seems like I am the odd man out. What’s wrong with the 215x15 rim?
I have travelled through a fair chunk of Africa and spent all my years in Forestry, all-in-all 18 years with Hilux. In the early years they were with the 16inch split rim using Firestone Town & Country. Then the 215x15 came on the scene. Once went for the bigger ‘takkies’ but very quickly went back to the 215x15. Most of the time using F-stone ATX. Have never felt that the tyre size, or the tyre was inadequate for the job at hand.
No matter where I am in Africa I’ll probably find a 215x15 rim and tyre. Not so sure about the other sizes.
Sorry no pictures.

The chassis has a SAS conversion done (i presume) as these 4runners came with IFS and the nose (bodywork) lengthened to fit a larger engine and radiator. You can actually see where the fenders were cut end rejoined

Re: Picture of cars with different size of the tires
If I'm going to mod my lux any more it will still be in an OBC direction and in that case 37" will be the biggest tyres I can use and the suspension he built won't be strong enough for the beating it will take in Aus. Even if I don't make it to Aus, I'm pretty close to ready when a similar local comp eventually gets under way.....because watch out....there are already a couple of okes working on a local OBC style event.
