Drivetrain oils

Post by Henry »

Just a few questions in general concerning the drivetrain
1. Is the diff ratio's on the imported and local diffs the same on a SFA?
2. What grade of oil is used in the rear and front diffs on a SFA ?
3. What grade of oils is used in the transfer and gearbox on a SFA ?

I have been using Midas gear oil for diffs and gearboxes - doing a complete oil change every 40000km.

Would like a comment from he technical fellows if this is wrong or not?

My personal feeling is that I would rather make use of oil manufactured from a reputable source, i.e. oil specialists. Midas oil is simply re-refined used oil, and is therefore a blend of everything on the market. Although oil itself never loses its lubrication properties, it's the blend of additives from a variety of sources that would concern me.

But then, I'm probably way out of line with this biased view...

Out of line? Not at all!

I have always had a bias to doing things right, especially when it concerns my Hilux. Then a Toyota mechanic (retired) once said to me, “There is nothing wrong with the Midas oils; just make sure you do a regular oil change.”
The decision on every 40000km was my own, rightly or wrongly?

I would say rightly, because of my comments above re Midas oil.

But, if you use a good high-spec oil (I think Andrew posted some specs somewhere), then you could probably double those distances with ease, providing you don't do too much water divining with your Hilux.

Good to change brake fluid every so often as well.

Yep, he certainly did, a few posts above this one! I should read the whole thread and not just the last few posts, eh?
