Fuel consumption data of my Hilux

Post by NicMcLean »

Here's my info sharing post on fuel consumption for the benefit of all:

I was active a few years ago trying to decide about changing from carb to electronic fuel management system and decided not to change anything and go and see schalk to do a dyno tune. Schalk (in pretoria) is brilliant, he discovered the 2nd stage jet on the carb was way too big and modified accordingly to result in marked improved performance and consumption, he also proved that the exhaust (whether on, off, has wholes or not) makes no difference to the performance - so its never worth replacing an exhaust!

I have been collecting fuel consumption data for the last 7 years (since 2008) and am happy to share the data with anyone interested - please let me know how to post an xl spreadsheet and where...

I have tested the turboflo fuel saving device which actually works - around 10% improvement. (from 7 to 7.7km/l)
I've also tested the extreme fuel saving additive which actually worsened the fuel consumption from 7.87 to 7.33km/l
.
When I discovered how much I am saving on the turboflo I started promoting and reselling the devices (mostly giving them away to my friends and family) - most people are sceptics, but a few people bought them... I'm saving around R3700/year based on 20000km/year. I am now ready to change to a light utility diesel and plan to run on biodiesel (home-made).

Now I'm selling this hilux and will post it on the classifieds section...
Please advise if you would like this data and how to share it with the forum

Here is my vehicle spec:

Scotty wrote:Hi chaps

There is some scattered info on the forum about the various motors and fuel consumption, let's have ago at getting some of it together in a thread.

The last time I worked on our Hilux's engine I think the mechanic helping me got the fuel mixtures all wrong which sent the consumption through the roof +- 4km/litre, it was much better before this change.

The previous owners said they got consumption between 10.5L and 15L per hundred, but I think they were a little optimistic

I know there are so many factors that affect fuel consumption, but here goes (feel free to add more info/ criteria I have missed/omitted when you post):

Vehicle: 1987 SFA Hilux Double Cab (Import)
Km's on the clock: 270 000
Motor: 2.2L 4Y Petrol ( sub assembly done at 190 000kms)
Vehicle lift/ suspension: OME leaf springs and shocks, extended shackles
Tyres: 31" BF Goodrich All Terrain
Carb mod/ spacers?:No, Standard
Air filter: Donaldson
Snorkel?: No
EFI?: No
Cam cut?:No
Exhaust mod?:Freeflow exhaust, branch fitted
Tyre pressure Around town with lighter loads, 1.9psi in the rear and 2psi in the front.
Permanent roofrack/ tent etc?:No
Aircon?:Broken so not ever used
Canopy?:

CONSUPTION:Mainly done town driving so far. Max speed very rarely over 110kph (real GPS speed). Consumption was around 6km/L and is now running rich at 4.5km/L.

It would be most interesting to hear from the rest of you.

Cheers

Hello Scotty. I have a 2011 Hilux SR5 dual cab 4x4 3lt turbo Deisel. My wife & Itowed our 16 ft caravan to Inverloch (near Philip Island), from Wagga Wagga last October. 700km & we got 600km on 75 litres of fuel. I had the cruise set on 98 kmh on the Freeway. We were very happy with this economy. Cheers,

Can someone please tell me where I might find the factory fitted Transmision oil cooler on my 2011 Hilux 3lt turbo deisel??. I'm told it has one, but I've been under the thing & in the engine bay but can't seem to locate it. I'm considdering fitting an after market one as well. Cheers, Fossil.

Morning guys.
Here is a age old question.
Bigger diameter wheels vs smaller wheels.
Which one will give you better fuel economy?
Please apply the math if you like, not that I would know how to work it.ha ha

With my old 2.2 I found that 31" tyres were the better option. The KZ might fare better with 32's because it has enough torque to handle them. There comes a 'tipping point' where a tyre size gets too big and causes the motor to labour too much and the fuel economy drops off again.

A lot will depend on what the vehicle is mostly used for (town driving vs country roads) and of course driving style. Stop / start driving with lots of acceleration points will fare better with diameters that are on the smaller side and the opposite applies with rural applications.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

That's pretty good Isak!

Depending on what tyres you have on there, you should be running them somewhere around 2.4 Bar or even slightly more on asphalt - off road you can drop them down to 1.8 bar for gravel and down to 1.4 bar for the rougher stuff. :winkx:

Can anyone give me some info on what diesel engine with ok performance and good fuel consumption that fits straight on the gearbox with minor modifications like exhaust, engine mountings, radiator

Sorry just to ad its a 5 speed gearbox

Really hope to get some info thanks Gents

Hi guys, I recently brought a new 2.8 gd6 DC 4x4 and at about 4k on the clock I was getting 9.1lt /100, town driving, I subsequently had it chipped (unichip Q4) and took the ball and chain on a road trippie(400km) and got 7.2lt/100kmImage, I know right!?. I just hope the chip isn't throwing computer out of wack cause I can live with that figure. Currently I'm back up to 8lt/100km to work and back Image

I just got the same 2.8gd6 DC, still running in on 3rd diesel fill & getting around 9.3L/100km but expecting the mileage to get better as engine loosens up. Was thinking of installing Unichip Q4 sometime later, how has it been performing & consumption wise? 7.2ltr/100km is some very impressive figure but is it actually only consuming that much?

Hi thibens, my gd6 is currently on 8.4lt/100km ... Majority town driving like a teenager since the chip damn difficult to stay away from the go pedal!. The lux is on 7K now and the worst I've gotten is 9.7 playing on Atlantis dunes. I hear you afa actual consumption goes because the most fuel per fill I've put in is 61lt from which I get just over 700ks, so something out of calibration?,or a huge reserve!.

I think it's the case of both huge reserve & newly(ish) calibrated fuel gauge. Noticed the fuel needle started moving from point go once tank is fully filled, unlike my previous Hilux which only moves after abt 100km & consistently returned 760 - 790km for a full tank.
So not very impressed with GD6's the current consumption considering the low rolling RPM.. 6speed.. brand new engine..etc.

Took the family to Gordons Bay on Sat. Filled up at Caltex Greenways (R11.59 / lt  ) and went back the Sunday for spot of fishing and filled up again. Pretty laid back driving, taking it easy on the revs, max 120 on highway. Try to stick to 100kmh, sometimes even cruising at 80 when i don't feel like overtaking.

Hi Guys

First post on the forum :)

2017 2.4 GD6 DC SRX 4x4
40000 km

Average (traffic and freeway driving) 8.2/ 100km

Small concern i am having:

When i fill (usually before the refuel indication!!!), range displays around 850km. After doing about 20km, the range steadily drops and settles around 700 and then more or less matches my odometer. Does this happen to anyone else?

I went to Langebaan over the weekend and filled up. Range meter on dash shows "0"
Consumption and all other info working great.
What or where can I look?
To answer your question, yes, mine did the same than yours.
Surely not the most accurate notification on the Hilux
I don't trust it anymore
Bakkie went for a new cluster about 3 months ago (recall)
Think I should take it back sometime

Hi Guys
This is always a controversial topic - fuel consumption. I did my first so called “holiday” with my 94’ 2.2 D/Cab Raider. Really enjoyed it. Had a six day trip. Left Roodepoort on 7th July went to Wits Rural Facility, 6kms away from Orpen Gate of the Kruger National Park.
Below are my odometer readings and fill ups. From home to I tried to maintain 120km/h to my destination. It was just playing around at Bush Buck ridge approximately 80km/h, at Kruger national it was 50km/h.
Left home - 227992 First top up – 74.50L - 95 unleaded on a 100L tank
Refill Lydenburg - 228268 - 276 km done - 41.69L refill - 6.62 km/l
Refill at Bush Buck Ridge - 228777 - 509 km done - 62.78L refill - 8.1 km/l
Refill Graskop (coming back home) - 229341 - 564 km done - 64.87L refill - 8.69 km/l

Thanks Breekbeen, I think you are right. I dived the distance by the litres used. It gives KM/L.
I edited my post. So it actually is a bit heavy on fuel driving at 120km/h and I had my rears pumped to 2.4 bars of pressure.

Hi Mudavanhu. Three years ago, my average was 6 km per liter. After that I had put on a snorkel and only use Sasol 95. From there my average was between 8 km/l to 10 km/l, depending where I was riding. Most of the time, especially in town my average is about 8 km/l and at some point I get 11 km/l on open road - fully loaded.. I understand that if I could take out the catalytic converter, my average will improve.

Hi Mudavanhu. Fill up your tank and set your odometer on zero. Drive around until your tank is 1/4 full and fill it up again. Say for instance you had drive 600 km, divided it by the amount of how many liter you had put in to fill it up. Somewhere on the forum guys had a talk about the removal of the catalytic converter. I am not at home now, but in the afternoon, I will try to find the links for you.

(langafstand tank). Het 1250km gery en 125Liter by die pomp ingegooi. Lugreeling het heeltyd gewerk. Dit is 10km/l. Op die spoedgrens gehou op die spoedmeter. Meestal 120km/h. En terug met al daardie passe 9.75km/l. En 2 ekstra passasiers en hulle bagasie. Wat n wenner!
