Do you let your wife and children drive your 4x4 offroad

Post by SYRON CONVERSIONS »

First of all, my wife has driven my Hilux off-road, but only a few times to get the hang of things in case of an emergency, we do not have children thus they do not fall into the other category but we have seen many other people who allow their children climb behind the steering wheel and drive off-road with their parents sitting next to them, I am sure that most of us at some time or the other started to learn to drive like this anyway, what are your comments..........

The staement "No I'm not that mad" isn't entirely true. In fact it is the wife that will not drive my vehicle on or off road.
She says she is scared to prang it, , so it saves me having to worry about it.
I have tried to get her to drive it but she just wont. As for kids, the laatie just wishes he could drive it.

She does drive it on road and I am getting her interested in off road driving : D . She is not that keen at the moment due to the children (youngest is 3 months old). I did see her drive a kango some time ago and once she got going I had to asked her to stop after an hour of some wild stuff  This was when you could drive on the beach.

lol ekt nie 'n vrou nie en ook nie kinders waarvan ek weet nie :) maar so maand nadat ek my pa my bakkie offroad laat bestuur het het hy vir hom ook ene gekry! :) ek sal seker my girl (as ek ene gehad het) laat bestuur, want ek twyfel of mens 'n hilux sommer sal breek - hyt al swaar geleef onder my en nog nooit gekla nie - behalwe toe ek hom versuip het! lol

The old lady do not like driving off-road herself. We often travel alone in remote places (which my mother says we should not do) and we realized that if anything happens to me (snakes, scorpions, falling rocks, etc) then she should be capable to drive and take us home. So I did send her on a 4x4 course last year. If you only go on short 4x4 trails with your friends it is OK. But if you enjoy overlanding trips I think it is crucial that your wife or partner be able to drive.

I also found that using low range is the easiest way to teach children to pull away with a car. Just to get that clutch/acceleration feeling. in 1st low they cannot stall it. Once they mastered that they ca go over in high range. I think that protects your engine mountings and clutch. If you have children you will have to teach them to drive some or other time. (please do not do this on tar, out there in the veld is the best place to do this)

My een zim dollar se bydrae ...
Cheers

My wife does not even drive my SFA on-road, let alone off-road. She was a demon in my Discovery, trying to bump taxi's off the road  The SFA however seems to be her nemesis and I think she's driven it once

Not sure as to the reason why this thread is here, but here is my 5 cents. My wife is more than welcome to drive off road if she wants, but she doesn't really want to. Are we talking serious off road obstacles or just normal trail driving?

On an outing my daughter insisted that her mother supervise while she drives in a riverbed in Botswana. Mom/Daughter quality time.......

They did not keep to agreed route, got stuck. Use brute force on the petrol pedal. Burned the clutch. We almost did not make Centurion.

Still love my wife and daugter. However now none of them drive my Hilux without me in the passenger seat.
