Thanks for providing us with the thread to the 4x4community forum since not much has been happening there over the past 3 days. Bottom line seems to me from having read through the response of TSA that there is nothing particularly wrong with the tyres nor with the suspension other than the car should be used with caution on "unpaved" roads?

I am a Hilux owner, a 1986 4x4 DC model (very proud of it) and also a new Fortuner owner. No problems with the Fortuner so far - still on all 4 wheels but I am concerned that all of this (which of course may all be hype) has caused a lot of damage to the reputation of Fortuners (and of Toyota). What can I say?

Hugo,

I understand your feelings about the '86 Hilux, Bulldog is an '87 model and is still being run in!

Please post some pics of your Hilux in the "Member's Rides" section, I love looking at pics of Hilux's, esp. the imported ones :)

I have to say that I am shocked at TSA's response to the Fortuners handling problems. I travelled quite a few km's on gravel these past 2 weekends on the way to and from the Rebel 4x4 Rock Crawl and was gobsmacked at the instability of the rear. I was travelling on very good dirt roads and could not go over 80km/h or the rear started swaying excessively. In any other car I would have no qualms doing a 100km/h in the same conditions, but the Fortuner was just too unstable. And even at 80km/h it was not an easy drive - I had to concentrate very hard as the rear just "snaps" loose without any warning. When the road detoriates just a bit the speed drops to between 40 and 60km/h. I would have done the same roads in my Jeep at much higher speeds - safer! (And I still hate that car  )

I learned to drive on gravel roads and consider myself an "above average" driver in these circumstances. I have pushed the limits and rolled cars and have learned to judge these surfaces well over the years, so I'm not just complaining for the sake of it. I think I should rather fit 22" chrome rims with low profile road tires, as it seems this is what Toyota designed the Fortuners for and at least it will be safer...

American influence can sometimes be an extremely ugly thing. What looks like basically a good Toyota truck now has something resembling a Mercedes-Benz grill slapped onto it. Ugly!

But interesting nonetheless to see what other Toy's look like, even if the Yanks ruin them.

JB, I take it you're in Angola at the moment? LHD or RHD vehicles there?

Hentey, ek weet nie so lekker nie, daar is klomp moere watse threads nie meer so lekker issie.

My thoughts exactly.
