Evening all,

Is there anyone out there who has fitted a Long Range fuel tank to their Surf?
Is there someone in South Africa who offers a bolt on 'kit' for our Surf's? I know they are available in Australia - would like to avoid purchase from there if possible.
Many thanks.

Hi Keith, Personally I don't like the "extra" tank route .... always an issue with breathers and filling or pumping fuel over from one tank to the next. A single larger tank makes more sense to me and I removed the extra tank that was fitted by the previous owner of my vehicle. Instead we took out the original tank and enlarged it to 135 lit capacity.

Mine (low grade stainless steel) was easy because it was a very square angled shape but if it's a pressed steel tank with very rounded edges it becomes a little more difficult. We just extended it full width over the prop-shaft which gave another 45 litres capacity. :winkx:

Andy I have an extra stainless steel tank fitted behind the sparewheel and very happy with it. May be I am very lucky but I do not have any problems with filling the tank, breather etc. The only drawback is when I do extreme 4x4 I have to remove the sparewheel.

Thanks Mud Dog,

I must admit this has been quite a concern of mine for quite some time.
Like the way you looked at yours and did the conversion ..... really has opened up room for thought, thanks very much I will seriously consider this route.
Need to chat to the fab shop that will do the work as I have no tools of my own here to carry out any such work, that's why I looked at an extra tank - I have an old inboard boat tank that I was looking at using to add in - line so to speak.
Thanks so much for another angle out side the box.

The Legend .... my spare is on the back of my van - from factory.
That leaves the whole underside where the spare is normally located available as an extra tank space which led to my idea.
Something like this set up.

If your spare is on the back, then the extra tank is OK. For that matter you can then take any tank from a vehicle scrap yard that will fit in those dimensions and blank off the filler neck / modify the connecting hoses.

Dawie, that is the problem ... the spare hangs too low with that extra tank above it. Then when you have to remove it, the spare takes up valuable space in the load bin.

Here's a pic of the modification to my tank.

Of course we had to fit additional support brackets to the tank and chassis on the extended side. All mounting points have thick rubber washers that allow for chassis flex.

Mud dog - have taken to this idea a lot .... I am hoping my tank first off is stainless ..... as well as hoping the fab shop will agree to this method.
If you don't mind - I will use your pic as a life-like description to them so that they can have a clear idea.
Thanks a whole bunch.

Just by way of a quick explanation, the "50mm" on the side has nothing to do with the tank profile but more about the positioning of the additional mounting points. Also, the cut off corner of the tank was so that one could access the rear LHS upper shock mount. The tank fitted without the cut-away, but one would have battled to get to that mounting bolt for the shock.

Thanks Dawie, but I cannot claim the credit .... I don't have a TIG welder, so Dylan ("AM Racing" here on the forum) did it for me since he was busy with my EFI conversion at the same time. :winkx:

Dawie, ja - it's something that needed to be done to improve performance and driveability.

We had some issues that are mostly resolved but still a few small niggles that we will still sort out. I'll put a full update on the original thread in due course, so just bear with me a little longer. :winkx:

It's easy .... when you have a posting window open (full editor and not "Quick reply"), scroll down below the "Submit" button - you will see 2 tabs on the LHS, "Options" and "Attachments". Click on "Attachments" and then "Add a file". This brings up a mini 'explorer' window that you can use to locate the file you wish to post. File sizes and file types are restricted, so if you want to load a pic, the best is the "jpeg" format and resized to 800 x 600 pixels.

Holler if you still have hassles. :winkx:

TSA should have brought these out instead of the Fortuner - I definitely would have bought one!

Hi Daan,
Do you mean to say a front runner tank will fit?
Many thanks.

Very nice looking Surf Keith. What year is that?
Found any solution to your tank yet? I might be interested in one for my 1999 Surf. Wonder if there's much difference in 2x4 fit vs 4x4 fitment? (Mine is 4x4).

Thanks.

Anyone have thoughts on the fitment of a long range tank to my 1999 Surf 4x4? I'm going to take a look on the underside and see if there is space...I don't think I can rely on a Hilux mod to necessarily carry over to my 1999 Surf.

I also have a history question regarding the "Hilux" moniker/name. Do people here use the term Hilux to mean the pickup version only, or does it include the Surf and 4Runner? According to what I read in Toyota history articles online, the Hilux term is also utilized for Surf and 4Runner because they were originally built on the chassis of the Hilux in 1984. I've seen some Surfs with Hilux printed on it in bold lettering, but maybe those were models before 1995. Apparently after 1995, the 3rd Gen Surf and 4Runner, were based on the Land Cruiser Prado platform. So, I just want to know if I've got it right for the forum...all models of Surf before 1995 are Hilux; after that they are simply Surfs? And after 1995, anything referred to as a Hilux, is a pickup style vehicle?

Thanks much.
