Highest Korean Engine Mileage

Post by Rebel 4x4 »

I want to start this topic to see what is the current highest Korean engine mileage on your 4Y.

Some of us, mostly me (currently on 13 000km) are quite worried about these "little less quality" engines and how long they would last.

Use this format to start off with, you guys are welcome to add/modify the template.

YEAR BOUGHT: 2009/2010 - can't remember - previous engine has blown its headgasket
CURRENT MILEAGE: On Fong Kong Engine - aprox. 13000km
MODIFICATIONS: EFI, greatest mod (Louis Zanoli and Bennie Hurter), used all the original Toyota parts - starter, alternator, etc. Replaced thermostat immediately when engine was installed. Used Toyota engine coolant - the pink liquid.
Did not replace any bearing seals, (did not know about it), but no visible oil leaks.
PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS: Toyota starter packed up, replaced with a Fong Kong one from Commercial, still working great (R450 for starter, 15 -30 minutes to install). Recent trip to Mabuasehube, the oil cap broke, replaced that with an original from Toyota.
SERVICE INTERVALS: 10 000 km

That's not too bad, hey .... not as good as the original jap 4Y, but with a mileage expectancy like that, it's still a viable consideration. A properly rebuilt original with OEM parts will cost quite a bit more than the Fong Kong and might not give a whole lot better mileage.

YEAR BOUGHT: January 2006
CURRENT MILEAGE: 95000km
MODIFICATIONS: Weber carb, branches & freeflow exhaust
PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS: Replaced water pump after 5000km. Replaced distributer, seems to burn away contact points in distributer cap. Korean carb gave problems, fitted 36 Weber dcd, now problem free. Fitted original Toyota starter & alternator. Uses about 500ml of oil every 3000km from new, could be the small oil leak on sump. Remember to fit 4x4 sump!
SERVICE INTERVALS: 10000KM. Seems to run better on fully synthetic oil.

YEAR BOUGHT:2010
CURRENT MILEAGE:40 000
MODIFICATIONS:None, completely standard.
PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS:Leaking tappet cover gasket, stopped after tightening the blots as they were loose.
SERVICE INTERVALS:Oil change (full synthetic), oil filter petrol filter every 10000km,air filter and plugs every 20 000.

I have only put 10 000km on this motor so I cannot comment on weather it has been problem free since new. No problems so far. Power is very good and consumption also good with the china carb average 7.3 combined at speed limits.

Which brand/type synthetic oil you using? I used partly synthetic then switched over to Castrol GTX 20W50.... Now got tappet noises on start-up.... Will probably change back to Castrol Magnatec or use the Shell brand.....

I am using Castrol Edge Sport. I occasionally get a bit of tappet noise when i start up if it's cold. The engine seems to like the oil as it is definately performing better but I think Magnatech might just be the best option for cold starts.
