swapping out a 4y with a 22r

Post by krazy_kameleon »

Hi All,

I have just bought a 22r to replace my 4y.
I erroniously presumed that the 22r would just fit straight in - not so

am I missing something here? is there a different engine mounting to use?
before I break out the grinder and welder (again!) I wanted to know if anyone else has done this engine swap and what they experienced.

Thanks

Rick

I have done it the other way around, 22R to 4Y. The mounts needs to be changed and you will also need a different bellhouse.

Yes, I've got the correct bellhousing but had assumed the mounts would be the same.

How did you handle the mounting points?

By the way, why did you change to a 4y?

Thanks

The mounting brackets welded to the chassis on the 22r is more forward than the 4y.

You can remove them neatly and reposition them or make a plate with 4 holes that bolts onto the existing holes and themn thakes the mount on top.

Note; The mounting brackets and sump is different on the 4x4, 2x4 and cressida.

Thanks Al,

I have GeorgeJVR's old motor so the sump is right.
I was going to position the engine mount brackts on the block on the 4 holes behind where the bracket is now. It seem to be almost perfect. May just need to slot the holes a little
On the drivers side though there is a sensor that will n be in the way. Oil level sensor???
I do have a 50mm body lift and have raised my g box 50mm too so it does change the game slightly.

Thanks again for the advise guys

As far as I'm concerned Jonathan there is no such thing as a stupid question, only a stupid answer...

I go into the reason here viewtopic.php?t=15289

but in short, I raised the body 50mm and didn't want the problems that come with the body lift - fan shroud, gear lever etc
so I raised the motor and box the same amount, never seen it done before but I'm sure it has been.

The only disadvantage I could think of was it raised the center of gravity but I reasoned that if I made the track wider (bigger tyres or spacers r both) in the same proportion, the CoG should remain the same

No Worries George, we live and learn.

I didnt have a clue either

at least it is now "posted" on the forum and others can be prepared before they attempt it.

looking forward to having Rokorok up and running even if the interior is still stripped out!

The diesel and the 22R uses the same mounting position, only the 4Y is different.

I lifted my challenge Hilux's body, engine & gearbox 70mm, and then moved it the same amount back into the firewall.

The weight on the front wheels is less and my transfer crossmember is straight (better break over angle) together with 35" tyres and the 400mm i took out of the chassis, it works realy well.

Thanks for sharing Hoppy,

some points to definitely consider while we are at it.

P.S. I love that bit in your signature about "real Hilux's are Built NOT bought..."
