Drivetrain differences between 81 and 91 Hilux

Post by Jaco Versfeld »

Hi There,

What is the difference between the 81 Hilux's drivetrain, and that of a 91 Hilux DC. Will the diffs from the 81 fit (without modification), and will the propshafts, etc. work. I see that the 81 Hilux had a 4-speed gearbox. Will the transfer case be the same for the 4 speed and the 5 speed? Will the 4-speed bolt on (without modifications) on the 91 Hilux Chassis? Are the diff ratios the same? (The 91 might have had a gearmax diff....)

Thanks,
Jaco

Easy way to see if it is the same diff's is to check the back plate. The gearmax diff can open at the rear while the import diff cannot. Propshafts should be the same if the axle to axle lengths are the same. The '91 had a 2.2:1 ratio on the tranfercase, should the '81 be the same it is very likely the same unit.
