Octane booster

Post by Moonunit »

Hi All, been lurking on the forums plenty, time to post

Recently acquired a 98 SFA Ltd ed with a 22R motor. I sometimes run octane booster in my Lumina which does make a difference, takes about a tank for the ECU to adjust. Now I was wondering would octane booster work for the 22R motor even though it has a carb. I realise the timing would have to be adjusted to get any real benefit, just inquisitive to find out if anyone has tried and if there was a noticeable difference in the running on the motor.

Thanks

Hi Nicholas, yes it would work and improve the performance a little, but the standard 22R is not a performance motor. If you adjusted the carb and timing, as you would have to to get the benefit of the higher octane, you would have to add it with every tank full ... not sure that's ideal / convenient. If you're looking to give it a bit of a boost, EFI would be a good option, that and maybe a slightly warmer cam and exhaust branch. Just remember that the longer the cam duration the less low end power you're gonna have, so the warm cam might not be the best option if you're going to do be doing off road trails etc. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

In my LTD I used to run 93 oktane and switched to 95. in the summer the engine temp is higher running 95 than running the 93.
After returning to 93 no hasles with heat, even running in the Riverbed on a hot sumers day.

That said next time i travel up in Africa with a petrol vehicle i'll certainly consider taking a few bottles of octane boost for the fuel conditions up north

I thought octane boosters are only for performance vehicles and race tuned engines :slap:

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Octane booster, ups the ron from 95 to 101(depending on brand), this makes the fuel more stable(doesn't explode so easy) and helps prevent detonation. Hence you are able to advance the timing and extra more power from the engine.

I was only concerned about the running of the carb motors without tuning.
