Lexus V8 auto - would it run well with 33" tyres

Hi Everyone

Need opinions again. I have decided to remove the manual box again. Going the auto route. Does anyone have some insight as to how well the auto box performs with 33" tyres. Does the box kick down to third often? Any performance issues with the motor? How would fuel consumption be affected?

I have spent R24000.00 on gearbox repairs alone in the past 6 months and thus my gut tells me to get rid of the new box and rather go with the original autobox that is made for the v8. Would like to get some mileage on the vehicle now as it has been standing for over a year!

Any insight would be appreciated.

I am running 33's on OMO with Auto box and original management. I have no issues. It performs great. I am however far out on my speedo. When the dash shows me doing 100km/h the GPS says I am doing 112km/h. other problem I have is hat if I keep my foot flat then it loves going into rev limiter. The cause of this problem is due to a combination of the diff ratios and the 33's. It takes some getting used to but not a big problem because how often does one floor it. When in 4th gear and you punch the pedal then it changes down to 2nd and automatically rev limiter so don't do that at speed.

Depending on your ratios you might not have this problem.

Fuel consumption is at around 5.5 -6 km/l. Bare in mind my van is much heavier with 150mm lift and so on. I will not change it for anything. I love my Auto.

Nope I agree fully. I floor it often because it sounds soooo awesome but I have learnt to know where the limiter is. Just before it is going to I just lift off slightly, it changes to second an floor it again. I don't do it at speed cause it changes back to second instead of 3rd. Not so fun.

Thanks for the advise. Would one not be able to sort out your kick down to 2nd gear with some fine tuning on the TCU?

I would look at the same type of fuel consumption VAN has a 50mm body lift, Procomp 4" suspension with custom blades at the back. Bull bar + winch, canvas canopy, roof top ten and roof rack. 6km to the liter is okay...!

My lexus auto is controlled by the ecu so does not have a separate TCU as originally in the Surf. I have been told that one can't have the lexus ecu tuned. Only solution is to run a piggyback tcm which can be programmed. I don't really want to do that. What is your thoughts?

If everything is original equipment, I think the best bet would be to keep it that. I am going the spitronics route with ls400 box, and I believe that your kick down position can be adjusted to a position on the tps sensor. Whether it is going to kick down to second I don't know but will let you know when the conversion is done.

Does anyone know how far the propshafts need to lengthened and shortened for the automatic box conversion?
