Instrument cluster swap

Post by niclemaitre »

Hi there

So at some point in the distant past some previous owner of Rooies ripped out the 3Y engine and replaced it with a diesel. From that point the rev counter has not worked because it's for a petrol Hilux and the sender is not the same.

I have however acquired a cluster from a diesel Hilux complete with rev counter and I'd like to install the cluster in place of the old one. Unfortunately, it is not as I'd hoped a simple matter of swapping out the rev counter unit in the cluster as the circuit boards on the back of each cluster are quite clearly different. So much for the easy way...

Has anyone successfully done this before? Any advice? The plugs are identical, it's just a matter of figuring out what goes where on the cluster and also finding the sender unit on the engine and connecting it. Rooies has the 2.8D or 3L engine.
Happy trails

The sender unit on the 2.8D is on the injection pump. its the little unit that sits on the side of the pump on the engine side.

Finally got around to fitting the new cluster yesterday.

The petrol and diesel clusters circuit boards are identical, it's only that the diesel has a couple of different points connected on the back of the speedo to that of the petrol. They are connections for the timing belt replacement counter and warning light.

The diesel rev counter fits in just fine and connects up perfectly. The "P" connector on the back of the cluster is the one you need. It connects to pin 6 on the left most plug. Pin's are counted from Left to Right, with the female plug facing you. From pin 6, either run a new wire, or trace the old one and connect it up to the green/white wire on the diesel pump solenoid. Connect the brown wire from the solenoid to ground. The other wire on the solenoid is the 12V supply.
