Longer SFA Brake lines Stellenbosch/Strand/CT?

Hi there

With the fitting of my new front suspension my front flexible brake lines look a little too short and I'm worried that they might be damaged under full articulation. Any ideas as to where I can get new ones made up in the Stellies area?

Yes you need to extend your brake hoses. If you can get it goes for stainless steel braided hoses. You get better brake performance with them.Any brake and hydraulic places will be able to supply you with it.

If the brake lines pull to the extent that there is a distinctive angle at the calliper at full extension, then they are too short.

The "braided" hoses are certainly a better quality and more damage resistant, but be prepared to cough. The standard hoses are in fact also braided within the hose lining .... has to be, otherwise it could never hold the pressure. The hoses with the external braid are really the same thing, just with the extra external steel braid for damage prevention. (The motor sport guys use them because of the heat from exhaust / motor and there's usually no inner wheel-well skin that acts as a heat shield on those cars.)

I'm sorry to disagree with you Dawie, (I also used to think like you about the hoses), but the external braiding is not tight enough to give better braking, it's only a protective 'sheath' - the quality of the actual hose underneath is what counts. Either way, they'll do the job.

So if you're going to be doing some serious bundu bashing, then yes get the externally braided ones, otherwise save yourself some cash. :winkx:

Andy I hear what you say and it also make sense to me. The stainless braided hose on my bakkie outside diameter is 8mm and the standard brake hose diameter is 10mm.The people from whom I bought the stainless braided hose said the braking performance with stainless braided hose is better because standard brake hoses expand under pressure and staInless braided hoses do not.Because they do not expanded there is more pressure on the caliper pistons which give better braking performance. How true that is I don't know.

If you guys have had braided lines and see the outside braiding to be too loose and can only be a protective coating then the lines you guys get over there must be absolute rubbish! It's exactly as legend said, yes it's there for protection but it's mostly there to stop the line from expansion. The factory line will have a fabric braid inside the rubber but that does jack! A quality braided line will have an inner nylon braid, a stainless outer braid and another thin plastic or rubber coating. Been fitting them to 4x4s and motorcycles for many years.

Dawie, just check and see if you are able to twist the outer braid over the inner line - if you can, it's not tight enough to contain the small amount of expansion. Would be interested to hear what you find.

Were you able to get ones that use the existing mounting system Dawie?

Look on the thread where Nic have problems to fit his new suspension. You wil see there is a pic of my bakkie where you can see the stainless braided hose.It is not very clear but wil give you an idee how it looks like.

Pics of my stainless braided brake lines as promised. Andy the outside of the pipe is covered with a type of nylon/plastic. The stainless braided is fitted very very tight around the the pipe and does not move.

Nic I also take a photo of the fitting they use from the standard brake hose

I know this is an old thread but just to get to the question, does anyone know of a place here in Strand, Somerset West that does the proper braided lines?

Ready made from Terrain Tamer. They have the standard ones and then ones 150mm longer if I recall correctly.
