Hi Mark .... good to hear from you again. Hope you and yours are all well, and yes, it would be awesome to be able to hook up .... would love to do a trail through the Black Hills with you and your mates!
Yeah, it's sad but greed is in the nature of man .... whether it's greed for power, wealth, land, whatever ... it's the cause of most conflict, and conflict on a mass scale (wars) have been fought over many centuries throughout the world. Generally there is an underlying sense of fair play .... some practises are acceptable while others are not. (The Geneva Convention post WW2 formalised a lot of these.) Africa however, marches to the beat of a different, more primitive drummer .... barbarism and savagery still exist, wholesale!
As Mark (Gunta) said, we were forced into the military, there was no choice, all white males were conscripted into the South African Defence Force. Most of us that saw active service witnessed / experienced some incidents that cried out against the value system of our "western" upbringing. One had to harden one's heart to survive and escape insanity, losing some of one's humanity along the way. Each one dealt with it in his own way.
When it was all over some recovered / bounced back quicker than others, while some remained 'damaged goods', unable to come to terms with their experiences .... some of those scars run deep.
But hey, I'd like to believe that I'm a better person for it ... much like realising the real value of something only after it has been taken away or denied to you, and then appreciating it much more when you get it back.
We are what we are .... a product of our doctrines, experiences and our individuality ....and in our case, by and large, I think we're still a fairly decent bunch despite it all.
Take care.
