I fitted the longer shackles to Erics bakkie this afternoon. and it looks good

Here is the pin inserted into the polyurethane bushes. Do not worry Eric your bushes are still fine no need to replace them yet.

I used the middle holes this time and the lift is 10 mm less then using the outer holes

The original measurements with the stock shackles were 780mm measured from the bottom of the rim to the wheel arch.

With the prototype set they were fitted on the outer holes and it measured 820mm which equated to 40mm lift. Now with the centre holes used the measurement is 810mm which equated to 30mm lift.

Benny,

Looks great! Can't wait to try it out and I'm sure Bulldog won't have that nose-high profile that he used to have.

It has just occurred to me that if I do fit 31" tyres all round, I will be approaching the limits of my garage door opening, I only had about 50-60mm (can't quite remember just exactly) clearance over the canopy in her standard form. Maybe I should flog the Cooper AT tyres now and go for 31" MT, either Cooper or Maxis. Bodylift is out of the question, not necessary for me.

I just have to ask  - what are those two "pipes" that are hanging down next to the shackles?

Hi FD

Those "pipes" are infact the rear exhaust hanger hooks. There is suposed to be a rubber ring between there and ther rear of the exhaust they also apear to be a little bent in the pic.

Eric. A Quick solution is to put a few 'streepsakke' filled with sand in the bak of your bakkie and everytime you want to get it in or out of the garage, hose them down.

Pieter

My OMU shackels het 'n buig in, weet jy dalk hoekom?

Bennie,k ek dink hy praat van dieselfde buig as waarvan ek praat.

My question?
Why do yopu need, or want to, extend your shackles?

What is the problem?

Longer shackles provide some suspension lift, a softer ride and better articulation as the wheels can drop further.

I can make you ones for the rear. for the front i would not recommend going as long as in the rear since the angle on the prop shaft will become a bit much which can cause vibrations and premature failure. I will have to see how long the front ones can be extended safely before making longer ones up front.

My idea in the long run is to design a kit for upfront that will provide some lift and also relocate the axle forward to help with the problems of the rear wheels rubbing inside the wheel arches when you articulate fully while turning the steering. It is a bit more involved so that is why it will be a future project only.
