steves auto clinic

Post by charlietuned »

hello, is there anybody out there who has experience of Steves auto clinics work
I have just bought a 1999 hilux 4x4 with a 5l naturally asperated motor, Which, to me is soul destroyingly pap after my 3litre cortina bakkie!. I have spoken to SAC in cape town about a head and exhaust job
any suggestions? any bad experiences?, is it worth the R8000+? reliablity?
thanks charlie

I think that would be a waste of money. It is a oil burner and learn to live with it.If you want power buy another vehicle or stick a lexus motor in there.Don't go the turbo route, that is not successful. But hang on.....some crazy ideas will follow soon.

I tend to agree with Hentey .... not a great fan of turbo's for offroad vehicles myself ... you'll still be 'pap' on the lower end and that's where you need your grunt for offroad stuff. Turbo's also have a habit of letting you down miles from anywhere. I also don't think that the benefit achieved by fitting a turbo is worth the R8k and would rather use the money toward a petrol motor conversion or something more beneficial like a suspension upgrade or winch etc., etc.

When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Hello - I had one of the 2.8 Raiders and went the SAC route. The only difference it made was it felt like the handbrake was released. It is not worth wasting your money on this one.

Must agree with the other guys, head and exhaust job will make little difference... only way to get decent power is to turbo charge, but then your reliability goes for a ball of chalk... and the head tends to crack:

If the rest of bakkie is still in good nick, you could look at an engine conversion:

Mazda/Ford 2.5TD... very nice for those that like there diesels... 35K
Ford v6... old school, but powerful and pretty reliable... 20K
Toy 7MGE... old school(compared to newer options), powerful... 35K
Toy Lexus V8... very powerful, but expensive... 60K
Toy 2JZ(Spartan can tell you more)... ??K

Thanks for your input , the hilux is in very good condition with 145000 ks on the clock so im willing to put some more money into it Is there anybody in cape town who knows the ford conversion as i am a bit of a ford fan! The motor itself will not be a problem as i could quite happily rebuild one but do not know the tricks [and pitfalls]of mounting it into a hilux engine bay
thanks

Hello Charles, speak to Hoppy about the Ford engine and how to get it into the Hilux. Otherwise just leave the diesel as it is and change your driving style..   But whatever you do DONT turbo that 5L motor, they dont like it... :problem: :problem:

I had a 2.2 and a 2.4 which I both done the Bro-Speed mod and thin it was the best option. I done the 2.2 when it had 140000km on the clock. What a diffirence
