What size Tyres

Post by Martin K »

I would like to go up to a 32 inch from the current 30 inch Goodriches i am currently running. Would like to also change from the all terrain to the mud tyre. I go to Lesotho more than Namibia.

My question is does anyone have any experience with this tyre size change? I am worried primarily about the tyre fouling on the bodywork. The vehicle is a 2003 2.7i SC. You can see pictures in the members rides area under Martins Bakkie.

Martin I am currently running 31's and I would say 31's are the biggest you can go without any lift, the 31's already catches the front mud flaps and the plastic covering the windscreen washer bottle on the inside of the right fender. Just take note of the power loss with the bigger tyres going from the 245's to 31's (roughly 265's) you do feel the difference on the uphill's especially when towing, it is not that bad but it is noticeable. I would seriously consider going back to 245's or 30's when I have to replace my tyres.

I'm running 31" Coopers on the 2.7, standard rims, although I do have an OME lift as well. I find it a very happy combination, but then we don't have any hills to speak of here :)

I had 31" tyres on the SFA, but replaced them with standard 245's again, somehow I never liked the combination on the SFA, although it was probably more to do with the wider rims, which I did not like at all.

Thanks Guys

That is exactly the feedback I am looking for. I want a small body lift but the power thing and potential fouling make me think the 31 inch will be the way to go.

Martin, I also run 31"cooper st and when the wheel is turned past a cetrain point it scrapes the plack plastic cover on the back of the wheel arch. I drove in a friend nissan with wider tyres and it battled slightly with the "bigger" tyres. M2CW. Also very happy withthe 31".

Stick to 31's on the IFS... otherwise go all out and do an SFA conversion, lift the hell out of it and fit 35"s.. on bead locker rims... :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

Kaspaas, I like the way you think.

I have no idea what you are talking about though. Please explain what a SFA conversion is and what will it cost? Lift the hell out of it sure sounds fun.

There are some guys that do Solid Front Axle (SFA) conversions on the IFS bakkies like yours. I dont know what it costs, but once you have done that you can go all out
and put these on!! :shock:

Hi guys;

What's your opinion on the following;

My Lux is a 90' DC 2.4 petrol with 31" tyres and no lift. I would like to lift 50mm and go to 33" tyres. Anyone done this on a 2.4 petrol ?

What will happen to power and fuel consumption. At this stage she gives me 7.1 mk/l.

Hi Simon,

I think you will regret the change to larger tyres, power wise and fuel economy.

HiluxJunkie, a friend on mine did that. His Hilux is doing absolutely wonderful off-road. On road he sometimes have to drive in 4th gear all the time especially when loaded and his fuel consumption dropped to 5 to 6km/l, but then I must also add that sometimes he is doing 140 when driving in 4th gear all the time.

For off-road abilities and for the Cool factor, you cannot go wrong.

Heh... don't think that will work quite so well up here on the Reef! We've got altitude to contend with and the 22R is not that potent a power plant :)

Piet,

The roads here in the North West are built for Hiluxes :)

Or is that the other way round... :mrgreen:

But things are happening, I had a call today from a Company contracted to repair potholes and they need radios to cover a stretch of road 6Km long as this is the distance of road they are required to re-surface daily. Only thing is that the particular road they are working on was not too shabby to begin with :roll: Other roads in the area are much worse.
