Air Filter & Airbox Mod for 2700
Is it worth fitting a performance air-filter like a K&N to an 2700? If so, which one is the best?
I see on the SAC website they talk about a fitting a 'Sportflo Airfilter with SAC Airbox Mod'; what specifically do they modifiy on the airbox and is it safe if you're driving dusty overland roads?

Been there done that. In my opinion no I don't think it is worth doing. After fitting the filter I found fine oily dust on the inside of the intake. We also did a test on the Dyno with a Pipercross foam filter and the standard filter there was no difference in power between the two. It just sounds faster.

Thanks for the response. Why do you think there was oily dust on the intake? I thought that if it sounds faster it is faster :)

The foam filter has an oil on it that is supposed to trap the dust particles.

Are there any other (non-foam filter oil) 'performance' air filters that fit inside the standard air-box? (I'm up for a service soon)

Are those K&N type, washable, filters recommended? Do you get one that fits the standard Hilux airbox? If they allow better breathing, does that mean that they also allow more dust through?

Re: Air Filter & Airbox Mod for 2700
The cotton and foam filters both work on the same principle. IIRC the oil is positively charged to attract the finer dust particles which are negatively charged. What a friend om mine find on his quad was that the foam filters did a better job of filtering the dust than the cotton filters Go and have a look on the K&N and Pipercross websites, plenty of marketing information on there. I just found that there were some fine dust in the intake with the Pipercross foam filter and you have a chance of the oil getting on the MAF sensor if you over oil the filter. I chose to err on the side of caution. Plus the tests that we did on the dyno showed no gains when comparing a clean paper filter with a clean foam filter. I just replace the paper filter every 20 000km, works for me. The foam or cotton filter looks exactly like the stock filter except the paper part is now foam or cotton with a mesh on one or both sides.
The foam filter does sound good though.

Re: Air Filter & Airbox Mod for 2700
I did a search on the K&N website and this seems to be the filter for my bakkie. This doesn't appear to be the foam/oil type of filter and is 'cotton guaze' type http://www.knfilters.com/search/product ... rod=E-2233" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Do the cotton ones like this one have any effect on the power or sound?
Unless there is anything negative about these, surely it makes sense to have a washable, re-useable filter as opposed to the standard paper ones?

It also uses oil, works on the same principle.

As a matter of course get some switch cleaner in an aerosol can, remove the sensor in the intake pipe and give the sensors a good clean. Allow the excess switch cleaner to evaporate and reinstall. Makes a huge difference.
