Performance Upgrade
Hi All,
I need some advice on upgrading the power of my Hilux. I have a 2000 2.7 IFS D/C 4x4. I mainly use it for camping trips with a full load and a lot of the times a fully laden trailer. I generally don't have an issue, but when towing the trailer it needs a bit extra.
I am also planning a trip up into Africa for next year.
I been asking around and have been getting mixed reactions. The main suggestions have been Unichip or SAC's conversions. But half of the people say it does nothing while others say it works like a charm.
1. Which one would you suggest or have you used, or any alternative suggestions?
2. Is the power gain worth the price. I am not worried about any fuel saving, but simply trying to increase my towing/overall power.
3. I have read that the "dirtier" fuel up in Africa does not work so well with any of these modifications. Is this a problem if we go up every year or so, or only if you live there.
Thanks for the help!

Re: Performance Upgrade
Hi Kaiser.
If you free flow and do the chip you will feel a difference.
I did the chip on mine and there was more torque on the lower rpm's.
Regarding Africa I would not worry to much. You cant drive fast there so even your stock standard vehicle will be fine.
I only had 2 occasions where I got some contaminated fuel.Have a extra fuel filter. In general the fuel is not to bad.
My only pain was that petrol is way more expensive than diesel

Re: Performance Upgrade
In the off road racing we tried everything there is to get power out of an 2.7vvt. The money it cost you for an freeflow system chip and even cams from oom hennie van der linde doesnt justify the money spend and poweryou get really, cost me alot of school money. The best way to get power for cheap way Iis turbo charge. We have an turbo kit for the 2.7vvti have an look at the pics.

Re: Performance Upgrade
I am definitely interested. But now for the technical aspect. My first option was the lex v8. Now there is a second option. I have done my homework on the the first option, so I know what reliability I am paying for. What needs to be done to insure a reliable engine overall and under strain with this kit. Can you provide some specs. What is my guarantee with an upgrade like this.

Re: Performance Upgrade
on a 4x4 the supercharger I would guess. Turbo gives power at high rpm, supercharger at low rpm upwards.

Re: Performance Upgrade
Wel die feit dat enige ding hou is oor hoe mens hom ry, en wat mens met hom wil maak. Die goedkoopste manier om krag temaakmis maar turbo. SUPERCHARGER is baie lekker maar ongelukkig baie duur. As mens die turbo conversion doen is daar baie maniere.

Re: Performance Upgrade
I'm running a SAC chip, SS Free Flow, Branch on my 2002 model 2.7 i and yes there's definitely more power but whether its worth the money..., well that's the question. Its not a significant gain but its there for sure. I've kinda spoiled the extra power when I fitted muddies but one can still feel the vehicle is not standard. I would love to have "turbo power" but I feel somewhat worried about the strain it could put on the standard innards of the motor and to compromise the longevity of these bullet proof engines. I would like to hear from someone who have a bolt on turbo kit fitted and just to chat.

Re: Performance Upgrade
Hi Kaiser,
I would go the SC way personally.
The only problem with the SC is actually finding one that is on the market. I have one on my 2.7 and it has been grinding away for 35000km already without a squeak.(that's until you hit the gas )
My truck has 270000 on the clock.
The low down torque is what makes it so lekker to drive. I have about 220 nm at 1500 RPM and then it just keeps on climbing to 275 nm.
The Kw is sitting at around 149.
Happy hunting

Re: Performance Upgrade

Re: Performance Upgrade
If I am correct that is about 175Hp = 130kW on the wheels. Mine with the SC is about 110kw on the wheels.
The turbo does give you a lot more power and is relatively cheaper.
The low down torque of the SC is very nice.
One of the reasons I went for the SC is that it is bolt on and form TRD.
I can boost a bit more and would probably gain another 15 or so kw because the SC runs at around 11500 RPM and its maximum is around 17000 if I am not mistaken.
Consumption? I dont know that word
If i drive carefully i can get up to 8km/l (thats very careful)
If I let it work then it drops to about 5.5km/l (with towing or without)
On average driving I get between 6.5 - 7 km/h
I must say with the joy of driving my truck now it is difficult to go the average way

Dis Mike, hy het hier bo gepost.
Op sy signature staan daar TASPER by sy prentjie met die ARB sticker op die bonet.
En ja, soos dit vir my voorkom, gaan hulle sy Lux turbocharge.
