Engine power

Post by Martin K »

Lat year I posted a question about tyre sizes and got lots of good advice. Thanks for that. Now for my new question.

I drive a 2002 SC IFS 2.7i. I would like to achieve the following with some work to my engine. Improve fuel consumption. Get a bit more power. Not lose any low down torque but even improve it if I can. Not compromise on the reliability or life of the engine in any way.

i am thinking about the Unichip and gas flowing at this point. I believe that this will not harm the engine and may do what I need. Am I correct in this assumption? Is there anything else I can do? What would a ball park cost be? Any recommendations on suppliers for this type of work in Gauteng?

Thanks guys (are there only guys on this forum I wonder?)

I would do a modified twin downpipe with the standard branch, freeflow and a chip. Remember that the chip does not increase the power or improve the fuel consumption, the guy programming the chip will achieve this and your results will just be as good as the tuner.

Gasflowing the head is relatively expensive and will cost you more in R/Kw gained. Try the above first and then if you have the money and still want to continue do the head, just make sure you take it to someone that knows what they are doing otherwise it is going to be an expensive mistake. Gasflowing the head is going to cost you in the region of R6500 and more.

Just remember one thing, you are never going to turn a 2.7 into a super economical fuel consumption vehicle. I average between 7.3 and 7.5 Km/l with mine and I have done everything.

Hi Martin,

Don't own a 2.7, but heard that on the pre-facelift models the are two pipes on the inlet manifold that can be changed around that will help with power and economy. A chip should add a few kw's.

BUT you run on 31 inchers? Now those are very economy-unfriendly devices!

Or if you really need power, just bolt a supercharger on, remember power figures in the 145kw region...
