Tow Bar Mod - Hilux now 120mm shorter

Post by pietpetoors »

I moved the towbar forward 120mm today. I also made the bottom pipe shorter. All to help with the departure angle and also so that my Hilux can at least fit into the garage with a tow bar ball fitted.

So we went from this:

To This

An at the back it looks like this:

Pieter, I've always considered the departure angle of the Lux to be one of it's drawbacks. The long tail overhang coupled with the rear bumper / tow bar seriously hamper the d/a. I cut my plow off (the integrated drop-plate common to Luxes) and modified it to be on the same level as the bars (like in your 'after' pic). It has helped, but I still scrape the tow bar regularly. I am toying with some modification ideas myself.

Been toying with the same idea for a while now. Thought of moving the standard bumper upwards, about 50mm under the tailgate...

Piet, did you gain much d/a?

I would estimate that Pieter gained about 4 degrees d/a .... that does'nt sound much, but in real terms is already significant.

That makes a huge difference.Done the same on my bakkie.Must just make a plan with the spear wheel becuase the dual tenk has already bend due to the shock on the spear wheel.

After I moved it forward I considered moving it up as well but at the moment it is the same hight as the spare wheel so I decided that it will not help much if I move it up.

The problems with the second tank is exactly why I haven't fitted a spare tank yet.

Fortunately I won't have an issue with the tank since my LR tank is a single replacement unit which just makes better use of the space available under there.

Andy that sounds like the best idea. What size is it? If I am not mistaken Papa Joe has a tank in the space opposite to the current fuel tank (on the 2.7) where the rear silencer normally is. They re-routed the exhaust for this. I nether tought of just increasing the tank size which will of course save you the hassles of an extra pump, air locks, long filling up times, dents in the tank, etc.

Pieter, the tank was already fitted at the time I bought the vehicle, and I've never really measured it's capacity. I estimate it to be somewhere around the 130 litre mark judging by how much it takes to fill at the pumps (I never wait for the tank to become empty before topping up  ). And yes, I don't have airlocks and other problems associated with double tanks. I did post pics here on the forum some months ago, and as I can see the exhaust didn't have to be re-routed (old 1990 SFA model). I'll go back and see if I can find the post and leave a link here for you.

Found it! :D: viewtopic.php?f=92&t=4601&p=90901#p90901
