Dastek UniChip - To remove or not?
Hi All,
This is my first post on the forum, I have always had Hiluxes in the past (2.7 SFA and 2.2 4Y) and doubt whether I will ever drive a bakkie other than a Hilux.
I'm not really an off-road kind of guy, but appreciate a good 4x4 route to reach a good a fishing destination. That is the way I like it. I recently bought a 2008 3.0 D4D 4x4 D/C with some modifications to it. I do not know anything about diesels and would like some opinions on the Dastek Unichip (which I found out was installed in the vehicle).
The Toyota agents told me to remove it as it will shorten the life of the engine and the injectors etc. The vehicle is out of warranty, so it will not really affect anything from Toyota directly.
Question is, do I remove it or keep it in?

I know some guys chip the 3l for a bit more power to pull trailers etc, but on it own its quit potent. The chip will certainly put more strain on the engine if you use that power continuesly, but if you don't just keep it there just incase you need the power.

Welcome Dewald Glad you posted :wink2:
I would keep it, without a doubt! You should just have it dyno'ed every now and then.
Do you know if the exhaust has been done?
Toy enjine is 25% under specked anyway so I doubt that it would be a problem!
Mine has been in for 3 years now

Thanks for the response guys,
I think I will keep it in for now.
Mark, yes, I think the exhaust system was done as well, the previous owner it cost him R8k for the installation.

I think they are usually used as worklights on mines.
The are completely dustproof, waterproof etc. and last a lifetime. Also come at a hefty price tag of around R4k per light.
I think check out http://www.trysome.cc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for more information.

I've yet to hear a vehicle with a chip fitted to be reliable. Do a bit of researching with google and read reviews about the specific chip that you have.

Re: Dastek UniChip - To remove or not?
I'd leave it in.
My specific chip has been travelling with me, and has been remapped from a Hilux to a Hilux to an Isuzu and back to a Hilux. In my first Hilux it worked for 280,000km's, in the second it worked for 215,000km and in the Isuzu for 90,000km, and has been in Dreadnought now for 130,000km. No problems in the first 3 vehicles, and the injectors that has died in Dreadnought was fuel, and NOT the chip.

Know what you don't know.

Re: Dastek UniChip - To remove or not?
I have used the same Dastek from my 1st 3.0DxD (2005) Hilux then moved it to my Fortuner and now back in my new Hilux. Altogether about 400 000 km and I never had a problem. As a matter of fact the chip did excactly what it was suposed to do, increase km /l and give more power.
