Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
I do a fair amount of gravel/dirt road driving and I get a fair amount of dust around the snorkel intake. Obviously some of this goes down the snorkel and into the air-filter as well and I'd like to try and prevent this as much as possible.
Does anyone have some bright ideas? Maybe someone has tried fashioning a filter of sorts. If so, how well does it work and does it negatively impact performance?
Thanks,
Brent

Use a prefilter instead of the volstruiskoppie you have on the snorkel. You can also try to turn the volstruiskoppie around but I never found it to make na big difference.

Re: Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
Try turning it 180degrees on those long dust roads.
Still has a "suction" effect to have air to be taken in.

Re: Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
you can buy a air filter hey use on quad bikes
slip it over the snorkel
you oil this filter with filter oil and bob your uncle
dust collects on the oil
clean air into pipe
you can store it in a plastic bag under you seat and install when needed

Re: Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
I think Mega4x4 use to have as you had the option of the volstruiskoppie or the pre filter in the Safari Snorkel. But I am sure you would find it at Masterparts or even a Koop ( Agrimark ) You do get a big and small one, I would go for small one.

Re: Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
Turn the head of the snorkel back wards, works on the same principle as the pre-filter. In the pre-filter the speed of the air/dust particles are been reduced so that the heavier particles can filter to the bottom, or spinned outwards and settle to the bottom. If the snorkel look backwards the heavier particles will not make the u-turn and would not be sucked in. Obvoius some will be sucked in.

Re: Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
DONT get a pre-filter !
I went down the same road, bought a pre-filter from Donaldson.
YES, it does filter better.
BUT it is HEAVY, and you can actually SEE the snorkel pipe moving when driving heavy corrugations !!!!! That vibration goes straight to the three little screws that holds the bracket to the A-pillar !!
I got scared all these vibrations/movement would wear the screws loose ....
Removed it and refitted the standard snorkel intake.
Now I just turn it around when doing gravel roads. .... actually a nice sound when the turbo spools up ... :)

Still the best way to go but gets dirty really fast so make sure you carry a spare and oil, then when one is dirty you wash it let it dry and re-oil while the spare is is getting dirty.....
You can also make up a holder for normal filter media or filter paper......

Why all the effort?? The snorkel already reduces the dust intake massively from its original position?? Air filters also need to be changed now and again you know...

Re: Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
Surface area, Surface area, Surface area! Except for the cyclonic pre-filter and turning the head around, the other ideas involve some form of 'element' which reduce airflow and more dramatically so as they become dirtier and more clogged. This reduces engine performance and raises fuel consumption. When the oil soaked sponge gets clogged that dirty oil will be forced right through the sponge which will make it's way down to the main filter in time and shorten it's life.
If turning the snorkel head around works significantly or not I don't know, but I don't bother with stuff like that. The Donaldson is one of the best if not the best, with a large surface area that can handle a bit of dust. I just clean it off after dusty conditions (when I remember) and have never had any issues.

Re: Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
I fitted a Sy-Klone pre-cleaner (not filter) on my KZTE's snorkel about 2 years ago. I removed the "volstruiskop" (http://www.sy-klone.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) I do a lot of dirt road travelling and after 6 months my filter element was still white. The element started turning brown after one year only. I know of farmers in the Murraysburg area with the Sy-Klones on their tractors. Where the filters lasted a week during harvesting lucern in now lasts over a year....

Re: Snorkels - ideas on preventing dust?
unfortunately if you don't want dust don't travel on a gravel road. There is no easy way. I drive a good 10km+ a day and if I remember, I clean the filter every 2 weeks. the filter stays white. the filter normally turns grey due to excessive town driving and all the exhaust fumes been sucked into the filter.pietdevs wrote:I fitted a Sy-Klone pre-cleaner (not filter) on my KZTE's snorkel about 2 years ago.
