Suggested Mods?

Good afternoon guys

We are planning a trip to namibia in april, doing the Lauberville dune route with westcoast4x4 :yahoo: , and then on to Damaraland and Etosha.

I drive a hilux xtracab currently with:
L/R diesel tank
LAS leveling kit
Homemade rocksliders
Unichip Q4 (power in the dunes wont be a problem :cooldude: )
National luna dual battery system.

I have done quite a few crossborder trips with the vehicle as is, and never had a problem.

Is there anything i can add to the list, which you guys thing i cannot go without?

Vian I am certain you have covered most bases with the existing mods to your Hilux.I been following a certain series on the dish, where a "very experienced and renowned" 4x4 journalist is driving a stock standard 4x4 of one of the other brands available on the market and is currently driving overland in Africa and declares that the overlander does not need the " extra after market equipment " to make the trip possible.

I totally disagree with this " VERY LEARNED " person as circumstances and conditions tend to change dramatically overnight sometimes resulting for instance the the garage with a normally very regular supply of diesel, has no fuel.
Or the normally passable river is now flooding the banks.Having the hi-lift jack or the winch and extra water etc among many extras, help to reassure the overlander that he has taken certain precautions to be able to overcome the natural hickups which very always occure when least expected.

My advice is to rather be over prepared than to be blatantly ignorant and arrogant.

Thanks for al the replies, I agree fully Firstgeer, although most of the stuff we put on our vehicles we can most probably go without, it gives us piece of mind to know that they are there, also lets not kid ourselves its moerse lekker to upgrade our 4x4s with these accessories!

Sjoe Thabo that is a bargain!! I already have a steeltop canopy used mostly for overland trips, thus it is in the garage until needed, but i decided for this trip im just going to take the tonneu cover. (1. Most of the stuff will fit, and i have mostly solved the dust issue. 2. Doing the Lauberville trip, we are staying at one place, and the rest of the trip is minimal camping, so i dont need the space/place to sleep in the canopy )

Personally im thinking i need a bashplate for now?

@stumps
Im still debating an aftermarket bumper, and the winch will probably follow

We do quite a bit of overlanding.. solo.. and we have a mildy modified Hilux, basically suspension, aluminium canopy and front bumper.

We found that the most invaluable piece of kit is a satellite phone... and then always make sure you have enough supplies to last you for about 5 days. The rest is just common sense... I think your vehicle is fine for a trip to Etosha and Damaraland. You will mostly encounter dirt roads, unless you travel along riverbeds in which case you will be driving on sand, and there correct tyre pressures will save the day.

Take the money you would have spent on extras and stay another 2 days longer in Damaraland... It is worth it..
