Hi all
So Neil (Thunder02) convinced me to install a rear view camera on me 2013 Hilux fitted with the standard factory double din radio (bought the camera from Neil). With the help of Hein and Neil we found it was easy to install the rear view camera. Just needed to figure out which of the camera wires needs to be spiced into the existing wiring.
To start you need to remove the left kick plate. Be careful when you pull it off as it can tear easy (I found this out when I removed it).
There you will find a white plug with four wires – a grey, white, black and red wire. This is where you will be splicing the camera cables in.
The black plug next to that one has a thick blue cable. This is your power feed. With the camera came a wire with a positive and negative. We started here. The one shown below.

Next you splice the red positive wire into the thick blue cable found on the black plug.
DSCF2103.JPG
DSCF2103.JPG (59.52 KiB) Viewed 2572 times
Above the plugs is where you can earth the black cable.
DSCF2105.JPG
DSCF2105.JPG (59.51 KiB) Viewed 2572 times
For now you will be done with the power feed cable.
Next you will have to cut the one end of the camera extension cable. The one with the two RCA plugs to reveal three wires, a black red and yellow wire. You will be using only the black and yellow wires.

Splice the yellow into the white cable. This is the camera signal cable.
DSCF2109.JPG

Splice the black cable into the grey cable. This is the camera screen cable.
DSCF2112.JPG
DSCF2112.JPG (62.1 KiB) Viewed 2572 times
Hein soldered the cables to make sure there is no possibility of the wires coming lose. There after tidied it up with heat shrink.
The red cable will not be used. This you can cut off.

DSCF2113.JPG (55.37 KiB) Viewed 2572 times
Now you have to feed the cables to the back. Where you want to place the camera is up to you. I mounted it above the number plate. The only thing that you need to do is extend the power cable as this is to short. Make sure you don’t mix the positive and negative. I found a rubber plug below the passenger seat. Feed that cables thru the plug and thru the chassis to the back

The rear view camera will engage when you select revers.

I must say that I am very pleased with the camera and the quality. I must just make a plan with the "NOB" in the screen.

So as requested I checked how the camera works at night and I was pleasantly surprised. As you can see there is more than enough light from the reverse lights to see what is behind the vehicle on the camera.

Could you maybe show how and where the camera was installed on the tailgate. have a 2013 Vigo myself with a cancas canopy and find reversing quite an issue.

On my bakkie I drilled a hole in the bumper, next to the number plate.

It does work a bit better if the camera faces slightly downward - less glare

I fitted the camera just above the number plate on the bumper. Placing it higher facing down would be better.

Mine is also placed just above the number plate as in the photo above.

Above the bumper with a view of the bumper will be better in my opinion, but mine gives a view of the tow bar which works for me.

Yes I agree. Seeing the tow ball does make it a lot easier to hook up.

The height of the camera also impacts on the functionality when reversing with a trailer.

numberplate height - pretty useless - had this with Elders.

higher and you can actually SEE the angle of the trailer, and it becomes a LOT easier to reverse - With the RAV the camera is about another 500mm higher.

I don't know what the IP rating is but I did go thru some deep water a couple of weeks ago were the camera was under water and up until now no problems. I'm sure the IP rating will be something like IP65 as it must be water proof for when it is raining or even when the vehicle is being washed.

I'm sure Neil will be able to check on the box to see the IP rating.

Hi William

I found the document below on the internet. I'm no electrical boffin but it seems possible what you want to do. Have a look and see if it makes sense.
Now that I acquired a travel trailer.docx
(103.21 KiB) Downloaded 54 times
.

In stead of placing the camera at the back as what the guy wanted to use it for just place it in front.

It should be possible.

On my hilux the reverse light was the power source to switch on the camera.

It was possible to have an over ride switch to switch it on at will - BUT, you need two diode to prevent feedback between the lines ...

when using the car radio as the screen - what triggers the radio to show this image ???? Is it powered from the camera cable ? Then it should be the same as what I did with my Hilux.
