Custom Bed cover with racks and roll bar

Post by Ge23ev »

Hello folks
im thinking about getting some custom fabrication work done on the bed to be able to have a safe storage for my daily use and a more organized cargo for trips.
i have found a fabricator where i live and these are some of the examples of the work hes done .

i wanted to hear your expert opinions on the quality and make of these and also i want to know how it would affect the handling and performance since its gonna be about 100 kgs added weight.
these are the pictures hes sent me for demo
what do you think ? its gonna cost about 1800 USD

nice concept.

how do you open the tail gate when you have some camping goods on that roof rack ?

100kg wont affect the handling. The fact that you will be putting goods ontop of the carrier may well have a slight impact on the centre of gravity (COG), thus the vehicle may lean a bit more in turns. Still this will be way less than on bakkies with canopies where the goods are store ontop of the canopy.

Hi Shayan,

I like the concept of that and think it will work brilliant if it suits your requirements.

Like Chris mentioned the COG might be slightly affected when loaded but will still be better than with a roof rack on the cab and canopy.

I was busy with getting something like this idea designed and prototype design before it was wrecked.

theres hydraulics that help the trunk thingy open like a kitchen cabinet. it also has a lock. works pretty much just like a normal trunk except its 4wd activities specialized.

It looks pretty good. In respect of practicality, personally I would rather have a canopy fitted that provides more space and height that will be under lock & key.

Everything that you load has an incremental effect on the COG. Without any load, the difference between that and a canopy will be fairly insignificant. However, with the higher uninterrupted load space provided with the canopy option, you can more effectively utilise as well as plan your loading so that you can place all the heavier items low down and preferably in front of or above the rear wheels. This will almost certainly give you a superior COG and handling than the setup you've shown. :winkx:

Its a pretty safe place but you cant just leave your bag with laptop in the truck bed and its best not to leave it in the car. So its good to have a non visible space some where to put your belongings when leaving the car in the streets.
This concept also has a lock and its nicely designed against theft.

100%

Here by us even the stuff in the non lockable bits will disappear quicker than you could say the word.
I used to be super nervous leaving stuff in the canvas canopy, but I have an offroad trailer now

This is what my setup used to look like many moons ago. I opted for the canopy option with more space later on....
