Towbar wheel carrier
I'm thinking of getting a towbar wheel carrier. I've come across this one and was quoted R2500 fitted. Any other recommendations? Its for my Pre-facelift 2.7 DC.

Re: Towbar wheel carrier
Charles, I had one like this on my 1998 SFA. It works......
.......but,
- always in the way when you want op open your rear 'glass door'
- mom can't drop / or lift it herself, due to the weight of the tyre
- your hands are always dirty after dropping / lifting the carrrier.
- sticks out when folded down, when you want to access your loadbin
imo, swing arm is far better.
Look at this (will find) for about R2k

Thanks Mark.
Maybe I should rather get a roof rack and put the second spare there?

Hi Charles
I've had the debate a few times in my mind already, if you decide to go the roofrack route, they're around 4k and how do you make sure your wheel does not get stolen? And remember on the roofrack I would think its more effort to get to the wheel compared to the carrier.
On a different note, what does "Senyetse" mean?
Regards,

Re: Towbar wheel carrier
Donkey, it was what the guys called me when I was working as a field guide at Pilanesberg in 1996. It means cricket in Setswana - I had a step haircut at the time and the one guy reckoned I looked like Jiminy cricket. The one guy was Tshwene (baboon) because he was so hairy, the other guy was Pumba cos well he looked like Pumba. Then there was Kwagga, I forget why we called him that.

I am going to be building me one of these, but I'll be using the stub axle from a Conquest.

Re: Towbar wheel carrier
Charles, I also built and used a tow-bar spare wheel carrier, and it is a LOT of hassle... Threw it out after just one trip, and made another plan. Rather get a swing-arm, if you have to put the spare wheel on the back. The roof-rack idea is also a bit of a hassle, but only if you need to get the tyre off and onto the roof in an emergency.
But then again, it might be up there for yonks without you ever having to take it down. The only reason why I dont like the roofrack idea is the added wind resistance, and the negative impact on the centre of gravity. :) :)

Re: Towbar wheel carrier
In my example I kind of need it more than want it. The long range tank is between the tyre and the body, causing plenty loss of departure angle.

Re: Towbar wheel carrier
Cannot remember the name, but in the newest SA 4x4 the guys went to some supplier in CT to fit a new carrier to one of the staff vehicles.

Re: Towbar wheel carrier
Charles - I also decided to go the roofrack route, considering the cost and useability of swingarm vs roofrack. Not sure about centre of gravity thing, but feels to me better on top in the middle than hanging at the back? Added wind resistance surely a factor, but does not outweigh the pros of a roofrack for me.

Re: Towbar wheel carrier
Thanks for all the responses guys.
I'm possibly going to go the RR route, I can get a second hand one for about 2k. I also feel a RR is a bit more versatile than a swing arm.

Re: Towbar wheel carrier
I'm doing the canopy and RR thing with jerry cans and spare on my next trip. If the vehicle feels dangerously top heavy I will get a swing arm & long range tank fitted.
This is what I used to have....tubing & alu plating. :D
