Headlight upgrade - Well worth it!
I just had a Headlight upgrade done on my Land Cruiser by Jos Hartog in Parow industria. It is available for the Lux's so you might want to cocider this one
Jos says that they did tests and found that after the upgrade your dims will have the same intensity as your brights have currently. They adjust it correctly when they are done so that it doesn't blind other drivers. They also don't remove your current wiring loom so that should something go wrong with the installed product you can just reconnect your old stuff.
Ps. This is not a HID kit.
Here are a few before and after photos:

Re: Headlight upgrade - Well worth it!
Most probably a couple of relays and heavy duty wiring direct from the battery through the relay contacts to Osram Nightbreakers or similar. An excellent means of improving your headlights! No extra load on your harness or switchgear (less current load in fact, as the switchgear now only controls the relay coils).
Reflectors and lenses need to be in good condition as well, but OEM Hella lights are not that expensive.

Re: Headlight upgrade - Well worth it!
New front lights from Midas or Autozone ( cheap ), relays for ALL lights ( one per light, one per spot ) also cheap, self resetting fuses,
( not cheap ) and cool white or cool blue globes, plus quality wire and lugs : about the price of one not too pricey spotlight, and million % more light.

Re: Headlight upgrade - Well worth it!
One can DIY such a project quite easily. Just upgrade the lamps to Silverstars, Cool-Blue's or Night-Breakers (my order of preference) and some decent wiring directly off the battery with two separate 30A relays ... one for headlights and one for spots. Let the light switches operate the relays and keep the runs between the battery and lamps as short as possible with a separate in-line fuse on each feed. Walla!
If you want to go a step further then change the headlamps for clear lenses, but I wouldn't bother with that part myself unless the reflectors were already tarnished.

Re: Headlight upgrade - Well worth it!
Kobus, thanks for posting and directing me here.
The system was initially developed for older Land Cruisers (60, 80 and 70 series), but will work for virtually any make/model where the OEM wiring is not up to the task. Newer Cruisers, Hiluxes, etc have suitable wiring and can only benefit from better globes
It involves a controller (relay box), new loom and, if required replacement headlamps and better globes. The design is plug and play - unplug your old loom, fit the new one; connect box to battery and Bob's your aunty. There is no cutting/splicing involved and OEM wiring remains as OEM
On a typical installation (controller, headlamps and globes), you can expect about a 300% improvement in light output on both high and low beams. PLEASE NOTE that I have not tested any Hilux wiring to date, but I know my old 2.4 would certainly have benefitted
To date I have mostly been using Osram NightBreakers and now the NightBreaker Plus which "promises" longer life (to be proven). I also have a range of Ring Automotive XenonMax globes which provide the same light output as the Osram but "promises" even longer life.
The controller also makes provision for spots and fogs. These can be made to switch independently or on/off with the high and low beams respectively.
Cost of the controller plus loom for single headlamp vehicles is R1 160 while twin headlamp vehicles is R1 285. Installation is R400/R650 respectively, but if you can turn a screwdriver and know that the red wire is positive, then you can DIY
Replacement headlamp units are dependent on model
Note that I would like to test the various Hiluxes before I make any promises Any volunteers for non invasive surgery?

Re: Headlight upgrade - Well worth it!
The current shape Hilux & Fortuner have decent wiring - the kit will not benefit much. Osram NightBreaker or XenonMax globes will improve light by about 100%
I would like to experiment on the older SFA or 2.7/KZTE IFS models. Anyone?

The air is much denser down in CT... the sea air, y'know, so the test will not work there!
I think Klerksdorp is at about the correct altitude for this very important test, located at a height halfway between Zilleville & Gangsterland. And I can offer both, an IFS & SFA Hilux...
Jos, I never got a chance to go to the PO today, will try tomorrow.
